We are 1st time kitchen remodelers looking for a reality check. We're looking at about 50 linear feet of counter tops and want to enlarge some doorways to open up the kitchen/butler’s pantry. We'll end up moving the stove and the sinks and will need to install a new breaker box (we have one of those old Federal models).

We're getting a quote from a kitchen guy of around $60k, and that doesn't include appliances or a new floor.

Is this in the right ballpark? He mentioned that the cost of cabinets (semi-custom/custom) would be around $30k... that's more than $600 per linear foot...

Looking for some reassurance. If these costs are expensive, can anyone make a recommendation?

My daughter just re-modled her kitchen. They got a quote from Expo for $30K for their cabinets. They paid $3,000 to join a home club and got the same cabinets for $11K.

That seems a lot on the high end to me. We did ours 3 years ago. We did most of it ourselves, but we bid it out to 4 firms first.

You seem high.

Funny, 4 bids and when we picked one, he would not come out and start the work. So we ended up doing it ourselves.

Good luck.

James,
That sounds high to me also, but without seeing the job it would be hard to tell. In either event, it all depends on what you want to spend. Granite counters vs. Other surfaces, custom cabinets vs. factory, Sub zero and Viking appliances vs. Kenmore, Maytag etc.
The electrical panel replacement should cost anywhere from $1,500 - $2,000 not withstanding any other elctrical issues that may come up when re-doing the panel.

Do a search around MOL for recommended contractors and get a few more estimates on the kitchen remodel.

Hope this helps

$30,000 for cabinets? What kind of mileage do they get on highways?

I think the keys here are that this is a very large kitchen with 50 running feet of cabinets. Even stock HD type cabinets (Thomasville) are going to run around $300 per foot installed, assuming you go easy on the options. Also there is probably 100 Square feet of counter. Granite is going to run around $100 per square foot minimum, although you might be able to get this down to the $75 range if you shop around and compromise on the pattern and color.

Also removing walls, relocating plumbing, etc. runs into significant dollars and you might want to rethink your design.

I would suggest getting at least one other quote and possibly compromising on the cabinets and design issues (wall removal, relocating plumbing, etc.).

Who's the cabinet mfg? Fieldstone? I would be happy to come by and provide an estimate.

Best of luck.... Mike

go to Jaeger for a cabinet quote. though $600/lf is NOT out of the ballpark, w/options.

When she joined, the place was called UCC Total Home, it just changed the name to Direct Buy. The place she uses is in Eatontown, but there are showrooms in other areas. They offer everything for the home at greatly reduced prices. On-line ordering is an option. The only drawback is that only members can get into the store and onto the web site, no guests.

there are other drawbacks. you have to beware of these home clubs - you cannot actually see any of the products or prices you might buy through them before you agree to pay the membership fee of several thousand dollars. there is no guarantee to you that you will actually save any money. sounds like SoOrLady's daughter had a great experience, but if you do some research on the internet, you will find the suggestion that this is the exception; there are a LOT of complaints, lawsuits, resulting name changes, etc.

It's true that they were not allowed into the showroom without paying the membership fee, but their friends had a good experience so they were not concerned. My daughter did some major renovation, purchased bathroom fixtures, lighting - high hats, sconces, chandelers; etc. One toilet arrived broken and it was quickly replaced with no question. So, yes they've had a great experience and saved thousands of dollars.

Mem - Square feet or running feet?

The devil is in the details. :-)

Bobk - Square ft! :-) However, one stretch of counter top is 18 ft long.

Shhh - The layout was a combination idea from me, my sister (she just completed an addition/new kitchen) and my contractor, Bob the Builder. It really looks good, only now the rest of the house doesn't look as good, and I have been painting and updating other rooms now as well.

1-2,
Bob the Builder ordered it for me from a supply place on 1&9 North towards Jersey City. He and his dad have been using them for years, so he got a really good price.
