I am looking to have a party for a young woman's 21st B-day. I have been instructed to find somewhere sexy and fun ... Is S.O.B.'s fun? Anyone ever been? How about SushiSamba? The Restaurant Tabla? a club called Double Happiness? I would be closing down one of these and having a party for 100. The prices vary -- Tabla being the most expensive option and Double Happiness being the least. I guess my question is that SOB's looks like it could be a lot of fun but I have no idea what the space is like, is the food ok, would a 21 year old think this was fun. Anyone? |

SOB's will definitely be a lot of fun. I also went to good parties at Diva Lounge in Montclair http://www.divalounge.com/, and Cafe Wha in NY http://www.cafewha.com/index.php |

Tabla is a great restaurant (best crabcakes in the world!) but not at all like SOB's - although I suppose the downstairs would make a nice setting if you had a DJ. SOB's is a lot of fun but food is secondary. I've only been to Sushi Samba in Miami - ok sushi - a bit of a scene. |

What is Tabla like inside? I am looking to have dancing on the first floor and dining upstairs. Is it "cool" inside? Is the upstairs dining room Blah? I have to get myself in a car and go see it. The SushiSamba West Village scene may be the right call for a 21 year old girl. I am just at a loss and her mom is hassling me ... about what do I think???? Do you think SOB's is maybe not hip, cool, and sexy enough for a bunch of NYC rich kids? That's what I am thinking .... ARGHHHHHH! |

Tabla is a moderately upscale restaurant, i.e., you can easily drop $250 for a couple on dinner and drinks. Since they fill the place up every night practically, unless you are really loaded it may be hard to rent the place out. Also, it is not really set up for dancing. |

I've been to all of those places except SOB's. Hmmm - but I'm not 21!?! To me Sushi Samba and Double Happiness cater to a younger crowd. |

I'm gathering money is no object from your previous posts about this family. Tabla is pretty cool - the downstairs has a nice bar, a beautiful staircase leading upstairs and the upstairs dining room is round with an opening in the middle where you can see downstairs. The food is great (same owners as Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe). It's a fusion of Indian/French/American. The bar downstairs is called the Bread Bar if I remember correctly - I'm sure they would do a great job and be very professional to deal with which might make your job easier. Go for lunch and order the crabcakes which come in pappadum cups with a layer of indian spiced guacamole and the crabcake on top - YUM! For other choices I've eaten recently at Compass which is really cool inside and I know they do private parties and Ouest which is a beautiful space with great food. Both are very expensive. |

Thanks guys. Howard, the people at Tabla are so nice but I did get the feeling that the layout might not be what we are looking for (though it does sound really nice) -- she really wants dancing and while they said they'd set that up in the bar .... I'm just not so sure. Eliz -- I'm going to give Compass a call. Pricewise -- money isn't a huge concern but to shut down a restaurant is expensive -- I had no idea what the price would be. Tabla is quoting $30,000. SushiSamba $27,000 and I think I could go all out at SOB's with a band and dance instructors and dancers and coconut cutters and have a really fun party for under $20,000 -- i am just not sure whether the birthday girl will like that as much as a SushiSamba atmosphere. Honestly, I don't even know what the birthday girl was expecting when she told her parents she wanted to have a party! |

How about half that price and have some PIZZAZZ. We can arrange for live entertainment, close the door to the public and stage an upscale party.....(Open Menu available, convenience to public transportation and NYC) |

Taj is a sexy groovy lounge/restaurant in Chelsea that has a DJ that starts playing at 11:30. Nice food and really yummy cocktails. They have a website you could look at. |
