I have two doors in this old house that have suddenly started to pop open and won't close tight. They were fine a few weeks ago and all last winter. I have fiddled with the latch and doorknob screws with a screwdriver to no avail. I certainly don't want to buy new doors. Not being particularly mechanical, I am at a loss of what else to do to fix this pain in the neck problem. I wouldn't care so much if they were just closet doors, but one is the door to the foyer near the outside frontdoor and the other is the basement door. Any suggestions out there?

Sounds like the weather change is getting to them since their exposed directly to the exits.
Did they act up in the summer at all?
They made need to be paned and re-hung.
Good luck

Likely you are just seeing the effect of the change in humidty, heat on one side of the door and colder air on the other.

So, the wall and then the door warps.

IMO cutting or planeing the door just wrecks them and you end up with angled tops and bottems.

If anything, adjust the catch that the door latch click into, or when you close the door push or pull at the handle to let the latch catch.

I'll bet that in a few weeks the problem changes or even goes away.

George, I just did what you suggested and it worked like a charm! Thanks. Still not ready to take a chainsaw to the wardrobe yet but when I am you can do the honors! I know you will love it.
