I walk by the furnace today while it was heating up to release the steam, and I think I actually heard the water boiling inside the tank. I dont think I have ever heard it rumble like that before? The only recent change to the system is that I installed the Honeywell CT3500 thermostat today from the LUX TX500. The furnace seems to be running fine but I never heard it sing to me like that before. Is this normal? |

If I am standing next to my boiler and I listen very closely, I can hear a change when the water in my water starts to boil. However, if I am the least bit busy with anything else, I won't notice it. |

Mine makes some bubbling noises when it is cranking up, (nothing particularly dramatic) and it is relatively new, (about 7 years) and works fine. You might want to just double check that it does not have too much water in it. |

Yes you will hear the water boil. That is a good thing when making steam. (Banging, Loud Poping, or Klang, thats not good.) Me thinks that since you have been playing with it you are super alerted to any sounds. |

So what does the banging, loud popping or klanging indicate, if they're "not good"? |

Banging, loud popping or klanging are indications of water hammer. That is fast moving steam slamming into condensed water that is draining back to the boiler and making a ruckus in your pipes. Water hammer can break pipes. Having it indicates a number of cases, such as but not limited to: Improper near boiler piping. Improper pitch to pipes in the system. Missing insulation on the Mains. Dirty boilers. Missing or not working Main vents. This is just a start, there are other causes.
