I've seen a few centipedes in our basement and most recently up in main house. I'm not familiar with these things and they are creepy. I called a local exterminator and he said that I could pour Clorox in the basement crevices, which seemed to work, but what about if I see more upstairs? Has anyone had these things and if so, what's the best treatment(s) to get rid of them?

Is it this creature - the house centipede? It is quite harmless.

Ewwww- I've seen a few of those around. I ignore them or shoo them into a bearby drain.

Thanks, TJohn for truly creeping me out :-) The site you provided was a wonderful piece of information, and I do thank you. I guess most folks have them in their homes, right? I will try the Raid for garden insects and see if that works. I just feel as though I gotta do something!!!

we have them, but I think they're silverfish. home depot sells this hang-up pest control thingie, around $5, that seems to do the trick for 4 months or so.

Having lived in Manhattan for 13 years, the silver fish are almost comforting compared to the frightening creatures that lurked around my former apt and coop abodes...they are truly harmless. Now those 4 inch unkillable mutant water bugs down in the laundry room on East 90th Street were another story entirely....

It was an amusing website. However, I would not use the Raid routine. Because, even if Raid does not stain the walls, it is a potent pesticide that you really do not want to spray all over your apartment. You will be breathing poisonous pesticide for a long time as without exposure to sunlight it does not break down that fast. If you read the caution statements on the Raid label, you should re-consider using it in such a fashion. Personally, I would use a slipper to dispatch the beast and carry a bottle of windex to clean up the mess.

I would leave the scutigera to go about it's business. It is a predator creature helping to rid your house of other animal pests.
