We have a ceiling leak directly below a shower stall. I have searched MOL for similar-sounding problems, and have learned several techniques for diagnosing the problem (plumbing leak, a failed pan, a breach in the grout, etc.). If the pan is at fault, who repairs this? I have the impression this is NOT a plumber's job, but something for the building trades -- correct?

Is it a lead pan, vinyl, or pre-formed fiberglass base? Generally replacing all three is a plumber's job but other trades, like tile setters, need to get involved too. A good contractor can arrange for the necessary trades to do their work in the proper order.

We had that problem, and the plumber who fixed it had a tile guy whom he used on jobs like ours. One thing to consider is that any damage to ceiling, walls, etc., caused by shower pan leak might fall under your homeowner insurance policy. Ours did, and we got new wallpaper in the kitchen becuase of it. We had just DONE the kitchen wallpaper, so it wasn't exactly a windfall....sort of a wash...so to speak...

Have you tested the pan to be certian?
If not, cover the drain and let the water fill up. Go below and look for the water. If you see it, it's the pan.
Good luck.

compsy,
Did your home owners insurance go up when you ac cessed it to fix the shower? I've heard that once you make a claim, they increase the premium.
