I am pleased to announce the Underground's Spring lineup - featuring the finest jazz, world and folk music. http://www.undergroundconcerts.com/ And if you haven't been Underground, here are a few pics from the finale show of our Fall series, which benefitted the Kopeyia Ghana School Fund: http://www.maplewoodonline.com/music/ghana/showpics/ Jamie Ross |

Pay attention. There will be a test on this later. He never admits it in inteviews -- like that one with the Star-Ledger last year and the one that's coming out with the local paper (Maplewood Matters?) -- but I had to DRAG Jross, aka MO webmaster and my brother, to see the Paul Winter Consort in Bar Harbor, ME back in '82 during their summer Whales Alive tour at the College of the Atlantic. Of course, he was hooked after that (no pun intended) and went on to become friends with Grammy Award-winning artist Paul Winter and members of the consort. (So far the Underground series has featured Glen Velez -- the frenzied, brilliant percussionist -- and Eugene Friesen -- the Casals-like cellist -- but where oh where is Paul ... hint hint)? Anyway, I highly encourage, nay, DEMAND, all to attend the Underground Concert series. It's good for the soul. Keba "Bobo" Cissoko opens the series. A master kora player from Ghana, Cissoko fills the room with harp-like sounds, accompanied by drums, vocals, strings and more. It's very good. (hint: reserve early). Glen Velez is totally awesome; don't miss his show. He is frequently joined by other musicians (eg. flutist Steve Gorn) and is a regular on WNYC's New Sounds with John Schaefer. Pete Fand I've known since '80 and can attest to his musicosity and general dedication to making the bass and treble clefts do new and wonderful things. He studied here (at Columbia HS to begin with no less!) and in Africa and always puts notes together in a pleasing fashion. You will enjoy his fusion sound. What's more, I've seen many of these shows in NYC and the acoustics are much better here! Dave |

Dave: Trivia Question: What NYC DJ used "Icarus" by the Winter Consort as the closing theme to their show? Trivia Question #2: What radio personality used "Bahn Frei" by Strauss as their closing theme? Trivia Question #3: Are you hinting that Paul Winter will pay a surprise visit to the Underground, or are you just suggesting that your smarter, better-looking brother make an effort to put him on the bill? |

1. Drawing a blank here. 2. (wild guess: Jean Shepherd?) 3. The latter (hey!), but I know he's tough to get. |

Ahem. Nice try LL, but you're simply too young (not to mention sweet and innocent) to beg off on the spelling, let alone pronunciation, of Mr. Kaufman's Submarine Racewatching ditty, to wit: B-Dahh Bey! (Whoa!) B-Dahh Bey! (Whoa!) Coomma-Sawa-Sawaaah BTW, I give full credit for proper phonetization to my kindergarten teacher, Miss Dobritz, and major props are also due to my K-6 music teacher, Mrs. Grossman, who early on told me that I had a "great ear". (If she knew I'd be using it to listen to the "Swingin' Soiree", I'm sure she'd be spinning in her grave.) NEXT: Can you recall the character names and related actors of ALL the "sons" on "My Three Sons"? |

Ok, this topic has strayed - returning to the original subject - I'm happy to say that our Underground Concert Series brochures have arrived and they look great! If you'd like to receive one via snail mail you can submit your address here: http://www.maplewoodonline.com/music/addsnailmail.php3 They will be available around town also. I'm psyched for the series to begin! The series kicks off with one of our most popular acts, Tamalalou with Keba Cissoko. Be sure to reserve early for this one this show has been known to fill to capacity. And I hear that there may be a special guest musician who is in the states from Guinea, he is a master kora (20 string harp lute) and balafon (african xylophone) player - and is only 15 years old. |
