One of the concerns about the reevaluation that has troubled me most is the effect of increased taxes on Senior Citizens who are long time residents. There was an article in today's Star Ledger about a program to freeze the property taxes of Seniors with income under a certain level. I don't know how many, if any Maplewood residents would meet the income threshold but its worth looking into. The article states that it is vastly underutilized. I would urge people to get this info out to any neighbors to whom it might apply. (The article says that reimbursement for increases comes from the state so there is apparently no cost to the town.)

The article is available online by clicking here

This is absolutely great, and I hope this alleviates some of the pressures I've been hearing about. I hope the TC or tax assessor can pass this info on those who need it!

Thanks for posting that - hopefully the Fairtax people will use their mailing list to get that info out - the income limits were higher than I would have thought for a program like that. I bet there are many seniors in town who would benefit.
Jerry/Vic - did you know about this program and can the town do anything to spread the word???

Can we post this information and have applications for the program available at the DeHart Park Center, the Civic House, the Adult School, the libraries and Town Hall for starters? What about a poster in the Senior Citizen bus?

More info on the program for seniors is available on the state website Pleas note that the income eligibility levels are considerably lower than those mentioned in the star ledger article. Those numbers appear to be a proposal in pending legislation.
