The State Diner on Valley in Orange has re-opened. The classic chrome decor is untouched and the menu and cooking is great. Good, fresh, home-cooked. And the place is clean (I love Summit Diner, but can't hack the grime).

Check it out and report back. This place is a gem.

I've gotta have my homemade corned beef hash a la Summit Diner. This is very rare. I'll check though.

At State do they seem to do their own baking, soup, etc.?

Dine well, all.

David Buckley

PS I'm less sensitive to grime (being pretty grimy!) but where do you see it at Summit?

I asked about the corned beef hash. She said she was making it there, but wasn't selling enough and it went bad. I think if you mention it, then as she gets busier, she'll probably do it.

Yes, they're doing their own baking, soups, ect.

Can't remember the exact location of the grime, but that's what I remember.

State Diner is on Valley, before Central (white castle).

(Isn't that Scotland Road once you cross SO Ave?)

I go by there a lot and haven't paid attention. Will check it out.

Sorry, let me clarify! This is such a typical New Jersey roads thing.

The diner in on Valley -- not the valley in South Orange and not the Valley in West Orange that is an extension of Ridgewood.

This valley runs parallel to Scotland, about three blocks to the west (halfway between Scotland and North Ridgewood.

I confused matters because one of the questions about directions went directly to me and was not posted.

Travelling northbound on Scotland (which is the name of the street that starts out being Valley in Maplewood and SO (!!!) , you can take a left anytime after Montrose and run into the correct Valley. It's on Valley in the townn of Orannge, before Central.

OY!

That is actually the same Valley Road that is an extension of Ridgewood Road in SO. It takes a jog near the town line between Orange and South Orange.

Okay--that helps, and that's why I've never noticed it going up Scotland. But I got confused since the White Castle is at Scotland and Central (unless there are two....) and I pass it often.

Anyway, I'll check it out.

Only one White Castle that I know of and it is definitely on Scotland Road, not Valley Road.

I've lived in this area 17 years and I still get messed up trying to find places in that section of Orange around Valley Road. I can always get back to Maplewood when returning home, but about 50% of the time I go the wrong way on the way out and end up going around blocks a couple of times to get where I'm trying to go.

Not to make things more confusing, but there's also a main thoroughfare named Valley St in Montclair which starts, I believe, sometime south of Montclair as you leave West Orange before you get to Bloomfield Ave. Could New Jersey BE any wackier?

You're probably right. My cure (sitting right next to the keyboard) is a Chivas Regal on the rocks.

Wasn't today just a great Maplewood day?!

I don't think so. The menu is quite small.

I love grits! They have grits at the diner on Route 22 across from Planet Honda. Yum!
