I attended the Feb. 6 meeting at which there were probably 50 or 60 people (I didn't make a real count). I was sitting with the Prospect Street group toward the middle of the room. I could not hear anything but a mumble from the building inspector who I gather was making an important report. He often turned his head from side to side and there was some kind of feedback coming through.
I could hear Mr. DeLuca most of the time, got virtually not a word from Liebman, King. Mr. Liebman appears to have his head down and I think that interfers with contact with the mike.Occasionally Ms. Davenport came through, but because it was not a consistent flow, the substance was lost most of the time. Mr. Ryan was audible most often, except when squirming in his seat, leaving the mike. Mr. Desidario (sp?) when speaking into the mike, came through fine, but he often spoke out in response to questions right from his desk.
One of our group made an effort to suggest there was a sound problem at the beginning, but there was no positive result. Asking a number of people if they were having a problem hearing the TC, all said yes.
Oddly enough, the presentation by the gentleman with the brilliant colored map spoke out very clearly, as did his presentation!
After the near riot and bullhorn fiasco, I truly believe it is of the utmost importance that a few speakers or an effective mike system be installed. I watched that hectic meeting on cable and can now appreciate the frustrated and combative behavior from the crowd. There was not "crowd extending into the hall and front steps" last night, but the speaker system is still unacceptable if you are truly holding a meeting in the sunshine.
You haven't heard the last of us - let's hope we can hear your response! I've repeated myself on the Township meeting thread, just in case you haven't heard me.

Mtierney, I understand your desire to be able to hear what's said at Town Hall. I get frustrated, too, when I can't hear. Are you willing that the town spend the money to install a sound system adequate to the task? You often complain about spending, so I'd like to point out that if you get what you wish for, and I believe you should, it will cost money, and it will be paid for with your tax money.

Sure, just use some surplus funds from the library or the pool.

Whatever money it takes to make the sound system work will be well worth it. How can we have communication between the TC and public if we have to strain to catch what's been said - and how our taxdollars are being spent! We had a near riot with the first public hearing on the reval - sure the number of people was extraordinary, but the lack of hearing what was being said was a major contributor to the rage shown. I'll just bet Maplewood boasts a number of talent sound engineers who would check things out free of charge and show us the best, most economical approach.

Yup,
far more important than the music program.
