We've got green stuff growing on the roof of our house and garage, maybe it's moss, maybe it's mold, I don't know. Is this a Very Bad Thing? Should we
a) ignore it and it might go away when winter comes or b) do something about it because it's going to take over our house?!

Help! If we need to do something, what to do?

It is either moss or some sort of algae. It is a result of a lot of dampness and shading on your roof. You might consider having trees pruned to allow more sunlight to hit you roof. I don't know for sure, but it seems to me that the dampness might shorten the life of your roof.

We have the same issue and it is mildew. I am thinking of washing the roof down with a weak bleach solution. Anybody see a problem with that?

Bob-
Make sure your gutters are clear. Bleach can kill plants if it runs into your gardens. Also, from a neighborly POV, I'd warn the neighbors, because if there is any breeze & the solution mists around, it could be very bad for mammals in the vicinity.
