Tivo users. Did anyone else notice that FOX started running the “Thumbs Up” to record like NBC? I wish all the stations did it.

Saw it too and thought it was an anomaly. TiVo has changed my life! |

Speaking of TiVo, I can't get mine to change the channels for me when I program it to record. I know it makes a daily call when it's supposed to but it won't change the channels. Instead it just records whatever is on the channel it WAS on, when it's supposed to change over and tape some other show. The weird thing is when I check later and go to the "Now Playing" section to see if I got my shows, it lists them all as if it did record them but they're not those shows - they're the ones on the wrong channels. I will call TiVo customer support but I wondered if anyone else knows what this could be? I have had TiVo for a year or so but recently re-set up after moving (actually a friend set it up for me, as I am absolutely clueless about such things). |

Jackie do you have Tivo and a cable box? If you do there are two little IR things that plug into the tivo and aim at the cable box, this tell the cable box to change the channel |

Jackie - are you using the Tivo remote to change channels normally? |

I use the cable remote to change channels normally. I seem to recall a little thing that sat on top of the cable box when we had TiVo at my old house, but it hasn't been seen since then. Problem is, back then I was still married and my now ex-spouse did all this stuff. Since we split, I have absolutely no clue. There could be elements to this whole TiVo set-up that I am missing and don't even know. However, the friend who set it up this summer didn't seem to think anything was missing and he is also a TiVo user. I'm pretty sure he would have mentioned it if something wasn't there. I need to call him but he's very busy. (He's actually a friend's husband and I feel bad bothering him). |

There is a cable that I think your missing. One end it looks like what you would plug into a walkman. On the other end is two L-shaped IR transmitters. Plug this in and go to Setup/remote setup Tivo will walk you through it. Your Tivo is down! Everyone to the rescue!!!

Can you answer a question for me. Can you watch TV on another channel while the Tivo is taping another show. You can when you record using a VCR, but someone said you can't with Tivo. |

mtierney -- yes, you can. You have to put Tivo in "standby" mode first. I love Tivo! |

Jackie - you have to have that cable with the IR transmitters or it's useless - that's what Tivo uses to change the cable boxes channels. If you find the cord it's fairly easy to hook up - do you still have your Tiva installation booklet? |

I don't think I have it. All of this is making me realize I need to go to the Tivo website or something and see if I can order a new one. I don't have the installation booklet anymore and there's obviously a big step that was left out when my friend's husband set it up. Argggh! I am so non-technical! This is so frustrating. |

Mtierney - There is a lot of confusion about being able to watch one thing and record another. There are two types of Tivos. One type comes with directTV. This system has two tuners, so you can watch one channel and record another. The other Tivo you buy at the store and has 1 tuner so you can only record or watch 1 show. On both systems you can watch something that you have recorded while Tivo is recording something else. If you have to have a cable box to descramble cable you can also only watch/record 1 show. This is because Tivo is only getting 1 signal from the cable box. If you want to get complicated you can get two cable boxes. One goes to the TV and the other to Tivo. Tivo is than also sent to the TV. Now you can record a show and watch Live TV. Jackie – hooking up it IR transmitter is extremely easy. You plug one end into the Tivo and aim the other end at your cable box. If you know anyone with DirectTV they will have an extra one that they don’t use, I think they also have them at Best Buy.

Hey, thanks, Brett. I think I'll try that this weekend. It would be so nice to get the thing operating right - I hardly ever can watch shows when they actually air. |

Jackie: See if Radio Shack or any store that sells Tivo for the IR blaster cable. It seems to me that's all you need to make your system work. [Personally, I have a ReplayTV, a TIVO-like system, but it works exactly the same way.] |

Regarding the recording one channel and watching another question...I'd like to refine my answer to include just cable. As Brett reminded me, there is the direcTV one, too. And I don't know anything about how it works. But, with cable, you definitely can start recording one channel, put your Tivo in "standby", and then switch just the TV to the other channel. |

I think you have to have a splitter on the cable - there are instructions on the tivo website. If we are tivo'ing something and want to watch something else we watch thru the vcr. |

I have a Sony duel tuner Tivo receiver for Direct TV. I can record two different channels at the same time, watch either or watch something that is already recorded..all at the same time. Direct TV & Tivo..perfect together... |

It seems like TIVO has certain recording features that ReplayTV doesn't have. But one feature that I love about my ReplayTV is the AUTOMATIC commercial skip feature, which works about 90% of the times (if it doesn't, then you have the "skip 30-sec" button, like TIVO I believe). Unfortunately, under pressure from the media monopolies, ReplayTV has dropped this feature from future (now current?) models. Ultimately, the days of our TV-viewing time being tied to broadcast schedule will soon be history. People will watch TV according to their schedule, not the networks. Yet stand-alone digital recorders like TIVo and ReplayTV also don't have a much of a future either, because of techonological convergence. In today's NYTimes, there's a review of a TIVO/DVD Recorder combo machines put out by Pioneer. This is just one example of how off-the-air digital recording capability will be packaged with other technologies. Personally, I'm waiting for that final convergence before upgrading from my current ReplayTV: a stand-alone machine that serves as 1) cable box; 2) digital recorder; 3) DVD player/recorder; and 4) good old fashion VCR. This actually may happen in the next year or two.

I guess this is a question for both TIVO and ReplayTV. Is it possible to record something while watching something else |

I was thinking of getting Tivo for my husband for Christmas. It's a lot of money for us, so my concern is this: is it going to be completely replaced by something "better" in the very near future? I actually don't see it advertised much in the million electronics store flyers I get every week--is it still popular? And, is it really as great as some people say? We're not huge TV watchers, but we do end up flipping through a million channels on a Tuesday night only to declare that "nothing's on" Any feedback appreciated. |

I got ReplayTV for my wife for her birthday, and she said it's the best thing I'd ever given her. I said, "What about the rings on your finger and the pearls on your ears?" and she said, "Not even close." Now she wants one for our bedroom! |

I don’t think there will be a Major renovation in five years. I’ve had mine for close to three years and Tivo has up graded the software twice (They do it through the phone). As my first post a lot of Networks are getting on board. Tivo didn’t really advertise at all with the exception of a few months before a merger with another company. This really is a great gift for anyone, it’s so much better to watch shows on your time, not TV time.

Tivo rocks....Direct TV has an offer for $99, can't beat that. I have series 1, not sure if series 2 is worth the extra cash. http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/imagine/TIVO.dsp |

If you have comcast you might want to wait. They are supposedly going to be putting out integrated boxes mid next year. |

1-2many...remember, Comcast will charge you extra for this integrated service. So your lifetime subscription to ReplayTV will continue to pay dividends. Besides, my suspicion is cable companies won't be offering all the perks that Tivo and ReplayTV offer. It's just not in their or their bedfellows' interests...to have automatic skip commerical feature. |

If you go to their website, click what's availible and put in your info you will get a screen that includes DVR info and says DVR will be availible in our area in mid 2004. I have no idea how it will compare to replay or tivo. I do have a friend in Brooklyn who just got a DVR via time warner and pays something like $9 a month (that covers both the service and rental of the box). |
