Another vote for Kroghs in Sparta--I got married in Lake Mohawk, and many of my guests enjoyed themselves mightily at Kroghs between the ceremony and the reception.

As far as the Gaslight goes--I've never really had a problem there. No, the staff is not the friendliest around, but they're no worse than at a lot of other places--and that cheese platter with the roasted garlic is YUMMY!

Its not so bad now, I went for the first time the other night and admittedly it was a dreary Tuesday evening. It was full but we only waited 5 minutes for our table at around 8pm.
Rumor has it they are very kid friendly so we may take Malcolm there for dinner tonight..:-)

The Pub is very kid friendly.

We've never had any wait when we've gone for lunch on a weekend.

We went on a Sunday a few weeks ago - there was a 45 min wait, but the weather was nice and the owner came out and chatted for a bit... food was great and worth the wait.

Maybe the people are more civil at St. James but I do wish they would look into some of the better microbrews to replace a few of the mediocre imports. Support the local economy and drink good beer - how can you lose? Having said that I've never had a problem with the staff at the Gaslight, but haven't had much chance to interact. From watching the owners they do strike me as miserable SOBs.

Hey, a lot of very traditional pubs in the UK do not allow children at all. Maybe Gaslight could spin this to claim they have an authentic British pub atmosphere!

Cheers,

I recommended anything from the Climax brewery way back when they were taking suggestions,....

(If you go to Famous Dave's on Rt. 22, they have Climax Red Ale on tap.)

For the record, Boggingtons is an english beer not an Irish beer. As for the comment that the Irish dont care about the quality of their beer, thats total rubbish, you really are not in a position to say this unless your Irish which Im guessing your not. Considering the reputation the Irish have as a nation of drinkers I think it is a safe guess that they would have a better idea of quality than most!

Hi Mary,

I could be Irish - you never know online! I've also drank cask conditioned Boddingtons (although Boggingtons is apt, I must admit) within sight of the Strangeways Brewery in Manchester, so I'm familiar with it being a UK product. There are about 8 other brewers in Manchester that make a more distinctive brew these days, but that is getting off the issue.

Maybe I was a little harsh in saying that the Irish don't know beer that well. But quantity does not equal quality. Once you get beyond stout (and Guinness controls about 90% of the stout market in IE) there isn't much of interest on tap in a typical Dublin pub. And it turns out that Guinness brews most of the other stuff under licence! This summer I spent an afternoon chatting with the brewmaster (a young German) of Dublin's only microbrewery and got the imprression that good/interesting beer is a much harder sell in Dublin than it would be in a major US or UK city. Anyway, I leave you with this snapshot of an off-licence right on the quay of the Liffey - this is likely the 2nd most popular beer in IE after Guinness.

I, too, have never had a bad experience at Gaslight other than the occasional slow waiter/waitress. I've only been to the restaurant, not the bar, and it happens to be a favorite of my kids. I've taken as many as six kids for dinner and have never had a problem. Eric is often our waiter and he goes above and beyond to accommodate us. The menu is assorted, the food is good and you can always get a table.

Oh please. Why do a handful of you MOLs feel you have to reply to everyone that doesn't agree with your opinions with a clever one-liner? Well....exceptions prove there are no rules!

Bud is very popular both on tap and in bottle in Ireland. Smithwicks is also a very popular tap only brew. Amongst the younger generation smirnoff ice, bacardi breezer etc are the norm (cant stand them myself) Bulmers (Magners) is one of the most popular both on tap and by the bottle.

Hunting..retract them claws. I guess I should have gone on to say that it is about INDIVIDUAL experience. And you have had good ones there. Thats great. Why would you assume the worst of a post? I meant nothing more than you had a good experience and thats great. To paraphrase..

Oh please. Why do the occasional lurkers feel they have to reply with sarcasm and feigned disgust to a post that meant no harm.

In case the Gaslight is trying to be in any way an 'ethnic' pub, it would be German. They have a decent Sauerbraten and nice sausages, but serve the wrong mustard with them.
Where they are clearly un-German is in their rude behaviour to families with kids. A Geman pub would not only have high-chairs, they would also serve a little sip to the little ones.

The Gaslights own beers stink!! They do however have Ramstein on tap. The best US brewed, German style wheat hands down.

If you are looking to hang out with your friends and pub-crawl a little, go to Hoboken. Plenty of great little pubs, the best ones of the main strip.

Trap Rock is pretty nice, but kind of upscale if all you want to do is hang-out.

Long Valley is great, but a little far.

Duncan your missing out.

In Long Valley, it's the Long Valley Brew Pub...it's right at the "main" intersection in town. Address is 1 Fairmount Road.

http://longvalleypubandbrewery.com

Take Route 78 West to Exit 24 (Oldwick),
Take Route 523 North to Route 517 North through Oldwick. Drive approximately 10 miles to Long Valley. It's on the left.

Figure on a good 45-60 minute drive from Maplewood.

Sorry Duncan,

didn't mean to bring up any old stuff.

red,

the beer there is decent, depending on what you like, and the pub is just plain nice. Also pretty decent food.
