Our house (built in the 60's I suspect) has a grade level crawl space under the kitchen, living room, and dining room, and it is easily accessible through a 3 foot square door in one of the walls of a grade level rec room. The crawl space also has a small (2 x 1) tilt-in window on one wall.

I've been checking it out regularly, and the space has stayed amazingly dry during this past season. The prior owners used it for some storage near the door, having put down a plastic tarp which I suppose also served as a partial vapor barrier.

Here's my question (finally): If I want to use the space for storage, should I cover the WHOLE floor with plastic as a vapor barrier, even the area which I'm not planning to use? The cement in the distant parts of it appears to be slowly "powdering," which I assume is the result of moisture being there. Will covering the whole space make that worse? Will a mold problem develop between the plastic and the cement under it? And does anyone see a problem putting down some linoleum flooring in the area which I want to slide around on to get things in and out?

I checked the MOL archives, and there are no posts about HORIZONTAL vapor barriers.

I don't recomend putting it on the floor as you suspect mold and moisture wil appear.
If yuou intend on utilizing this space I suggest putting sheets of du-rock on the floor. My basement was a nightmare with moisture and was a problem when I finished it. I installed du-rock and ceramic over it. No moisture.
There are some other options and I would be happy to discuss them further should you wish.
