I will be installing new sliding patio doors within the next month or two. I went down to Home Depot this evening to look at what they had and this was this evenings menu: American Craftsman? - $299 for the sliding patio doors and $529 for installation. Anderson - $899 for the sliding patio doors and $529 for the installation. I know that Anderson has a good reputation. I can live with the price. What about other window makers like Pella or Marvin? Do they compare? Any other names I should consider? If so, where would I go to see them? Also, what do you think about having Home Depot install it? Am I better off having a local carpenter or handyman/contractor do it? Any web sites that you know of that compare these types of products? Any assistance is appreciated. TheVillagePub |

I would go with the best I can afford. I believe Lowes carries other lines such a Pella, so a trip to Piscataway might be a good idea. They also do installations. Our Anderson slider still works perfectly after nearly 15 years on the job. As far as installation is concerned, this is a fairly small job and you might have trouble getting a local contractor to do it at a reasonable price, which has been our experience. Having a Home Depot or a Lowes install is maybe a little bit of a crap shoot because you don't pick the contractor. However, on the plus side, the big box stores have a reputation and will stand behind their work. Their prices are very reasonable. We had a bathroom and attic windows installed by HD and they did an OK job. We also had our water heater replaced and their contract plumber did an excellent job. |

We had a marvin french slider installed last year. Was a fairly large job in that the slider replaced two windows. A new header was put in and a radiator had to be moved to a different location. Took the guys two days to do the installation. One to remove the windows, knock down the low portion of the wall, install the new header and set the door. The second day was to come back an re-do the siding and trim on the outside. We went with a marvin with low e glass and are very happy with it so far. We used Essex Door and Window. |

I think Elite Doors would do this type of work - came to me highly recommended off MOL and did a great repair job on my garage door, though he also does exterior doors for your home as well, I believe. 973-731-8800. good luck. |

As mentioned above, Lowe's offers a nice Pella with a wooden sliding screen for about $900.00 They do have less expensive ones but, I do like this one. Therma-Tru and Atrium are both good products. Marvin is more money. Kolby and kolby is much more money. } Michael K. Mc Kell

Marvin, more expensive than Pella? The last time we were buying windows, and that was ten years ago I admit, their price point was below Anderson. Our contractor suggested not using them. |

Sports- How much was your installation? We are doing the exact same thing (radiator moving, etc.) and had an estimate of $1500.00 for the total installation. |

We have an Andersen and I'm not totally thrilled with it. I agree with going with the most expensive one you can. Does Pella still have their store on Morris Ave in Short Hills? I'd check there. We went back and forth between the Pella and the Andersen. The Andersen was a little less expensive, but to me it doesn't run that smoothly. Plus, the trim on the inside seems a little unfinished (and that's the way they are, my aunt and uncle in a mansion in CT have the same one). |

I will look into the Pella brand. shh, I do believe you are right about Anderson being unfinished. My brother in law has the French Door version and he had to put a varnish on the wood portion. TheVillagePub |

greenetree - Significantly more than $1,500 for the entire job door and all. I'll have to pull the invoice because I don't think the price of the door was separate to the door from the labor. |

Thanks, Sports. The $1500 only includes installing the door. The door itself, redoing the heating, etc. are separate. |

Wow - I really butchered that response. Nice English. Any way the entire job was around $5,200. That included cutting and moving the heat (which required some minor renovation as our basement ceiling was semi-finished. I also forgot to mention that there was an outlet that had to be moved as well. The only thing they did not repair was the floor where the radiator pipe came up. We had a floor guy come in and do that. If you'd like to see let me know. Our Marvin door came unfinished on the inside and was aluminum clad on the outside. We stained the inside. |

Any advice? I decided to have Home Depot come out and measure the sliding patio door for the new one. They, along with Lowes, apparently have sub-contracted to a company called Mack Installations. Mack came out and measured it and went back to Home Depot with the information. Before leaving, the guy said it was a standard install. Home Depot is now telling me that it is not. The Anderson 400 series that I chose will not work. Home Depot is telling me that I need a custom installation now. They will need to see which of their suppliers will build a custom sliding patio door. This is turning into more of a headache than planned. They Anderson will NOT be one of the ones I can choose from. I am ready to look elsewhere. I can't believe my back patio slider is anything but standard. I just may see what Pella has to say. Any suggestions? TheVillagePub |
