Jason and I are not in the mood to do our traditional homecooked Thanksgiving this year. Any suggestions for restaurants that have good Thanksgiving day offerings? We like buffet style on such occasions but sit down would be good too |

We went to Pal's Cabin one year--reasonable and everything you'd want served family style, even for 2 people. |

The Grain House in Basking Ridge (connected to the Old Mill Inn) is pretty Thanksgiving-y (building from 1800's, fireplaces, etc), classy and has good food. Probably sit down. The Old Mill Inn itself usually holds a buffet for holidays as well that is pretty good (we had Easter there). Neither is cheap. And a GREAT buffet (and again, not cheap) is the one at the Short Hills Hilton, not sure if they are having Thanksgiving. They have a Sunday Brunch every week that is excellent. |

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I am considering doing a soup kitchen thing in the morning, where you serve food or whatever. Can anyone recommend one? How would I do - do I sign up or just show up? |

Jackie - not sure about the soup kitchen idea (I seem to recall hearing that they get swamped with help on Thanksgiving Day). But if you (and anyone else) want to do a great deed to help share your Thanksgiving celebrtion with those in need - the Community FoodBank of NJ holds an annual Turkey and Food Drive on the Saturday before Thanksgiving (November 22 this year). Last year, the FoodBank collected and distributed over 12,000 (!!) turkeys across the state. The anticipated need is even greater this year, as requests for food to the 1500 agencies that participate in the FoodBank programs has skyrocketed. You can drop off a frozen, never thawed turkey (those supermarket giveaway turkeys are perfect!) and non-perishable groceries between 9 am - 2 pm on Saturday November 22 in the front circular driveway of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, 432 Scotland Road, South Orange. |

Jackie , soresident is right, most soup kitchens get tons of volunteers on a holiday... however, a few years ago I got a call from a soup kitchen for help the Saturday after Thanksgiving as all the "regulars" had extended holiday weekend plans, so, if your heart is set on a soup kitchen you might try calling St. John's in Newark, (I think that there is also a St. John's in Morristown), or even the Bowery Mission in NYC to help after the actual holiday. Soresident is also correct in her FoodBank suggestion. You can also go to the Hillside FoodBank to help sort items. |

Our Lady of Sorrows is looking for people to help make/deliver dinners to elderly/shut-ins in our community, they made an announcement at mass on Sunday. |

I had a very bad experience a few Thanksgiving ago at a rest home. Unfortunately the people that were there, were not with there families for a reason. I don’t think anyone really knew I was there except for the nurses. They told me at one point to talk with this one lady who would tell me about the cats, as soon as I walked in the lady started talking and basically never stopped, sad. Maybe there is a children’s home someplace?
