After a grueling 4-hour battle to install a ceiling fan I now have a problem that eludes me and need some help please. I want to control the fan with the pull chain and the light with the two light switches, one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. Problem is, once I wired the fan, the light switches control the fan, the light does not come on with the pull chain nor does it come on when the fax is on. This particular section of the house uses a two-wire system. The fan uses three wires. Now, the fan instructions say that it can be wired to a two-wire system however that does not appear to be the case. And I did try switching the wires on the fan around and it did not help. I got the same results I have now. Has anyone had this experience? If so, help! I really don’t want to call an electrician yet. I know what they will say and I don’t have that kind of money.

if that outlet has only a 2 wire system -- you can only control the whole thing on or off from either switch. then use the pull chains to have either the fan or light on (or both on). that the light does not come on -- means maybe there is something loose with its wiring? if this is like other fans i've installed - you have wires for the light at the junction box and wires for the light at the hub (?) of the fan, too -- so multiple points of failure! i've had fans that had 2 pull chains (1 for fan 1 for light) and fans that had 1 pull chain (pull it once for light, twice for fan low, etc). does yours have 1 or 2 pull chains? Another question in addition to the one or two pull chain one. How did the light work before you started this? Did the lower switch and the upper switch control the light? |

pete: the fan has two pull chains. One for the fan and one for the light. I agree that the lighting wiring maybe loose or not working at all. I'll recheck it again. jg: the old light that was in the hall could be turned on/off with either of the switches. The fan is a Hunter-Vista. Maybe I'm missing something in the instructions however it does say that it can be done. |

I know that fan, and given your answers, I agree that you should be able to get it to work this way. The light switches will turn the fan UNIT on or off. The entire unit. Leave the light pull chain in the on position and the lights will come on and off with the wall switches. When the wall switches are on, you can use the pull chains to turn the fan on or off, and you can turn the lights on or off.

So I'm wiring it wrong. Each time produces the same result. Back to the drawing board. |
