Durand Family Reunion at Durand-Hedden House on November 16
The Durand-Hedden House will hold a celebration and reunion of the Durand family, one of Maplewood's earliest and most distinguished families, on Sunday, November 16. Key highlights of the day will be a book signing and informal talks by Dr. Alvy Ray Smith, a Durand descendant who is a co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios and a two-time Academy AwardŽ winner. Dr. Smith is the author of Dr. John Durand of Derby, Connecticut and His Family, a family genealogy newly published by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society that includes information on the renowned Maplewood branch of the Durand family and its illustrious offspring, Hudson River
School painter Asher B. Durand.
The event will include exhibits of rarely seen letters, artwork, photos and memorabilia from the lives of the early Maplewood Durands. Also on display will be portraits of family members Cyrus Durand and his wife, a field study by Asher B. Durand and a painting of Asher's birthplace by Elias Wade Durand. A family tree will spotlight the various members of this fascinating family. A number of Durand family descendants are expected to attend.
