The previous owners of my house grew vines on the brick sides. Although the vines have now been removed, there are still what looks like grey roots attached to the brick. Has anyone had the same problem and if so what did they do about it? I've heard that powerwashing the brick can loosen the mortar. Also, any contractor/handyman suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. |

If you just removed the vines, you might try doing nothing, yet. If you have non-invasive plant material just clinging to the house, and it hasn't "rooted" itself deeply into the mortar, it should die off within a few weeks -- especially over the winter -- now that the root structure is gone. Then you might be able to just pull it off. This sounds too simple, it just can't be true. Other ideas? |

Look to Harvard. It is reported that they have done a lot of research on this topic and problem. |

Thanks Marken. However, I don't think it will be that simple. The vines were removed from the house over a year ago and the roots are still embedded in the brick. |

I think I saw something similar on "Ask This Old House". The homeowner had to buy some sort of scrub brush and cleansing/weed killing material. Then had to basically scrub down the house where the remains of the vines lived.
