Samuerj: are the numbers the tones? When I first looked at your post yesterday I was very confused. Today (although I can't actually read it since I'm essentially at the early toddler level of spoken Chinese) it occurred to me you might be trying to write in tones. Bacata | ||

Yes, those are tones.  First tone is a flat high tone. In this example, ma1 means mother. Second tone is a rising tone; here ma2 means hemp or flax (I forget). Third tone is a falling-rising tone; here, ma3 means horse. Fourth tone is a falling tone; ma4 means scold. | ||

Dave, what application are you using for the Chinese characters? There's a nice site (Mandarintools.com) that unfortunately has not yet added the Zhuyin Fuhao to its Romanization Converter. Since we use BoPoMoFo (aka Zhuyin Fuhao) for our class, I've been trying to make flash cards that have not only the object and the Chinese character, but also the pronunciation in a way that I can understand. I bought a bunch of flashcards in Chinatown several months ago but unless I've already learned the word in class (and remember it!) they don't really help me yet. Bacata | ||

Bacata, MacOS 9 has native support for Chinese input, which is what I use to write. I found the image above on the net and don't know what software created it. Maybe TwinBridge (http://www.twinbridge.com). Another Chinese wp is NJ Star (http://www.njstar.com). Curb, Better stick to ordering by numbers.  | ||

Bacata, Yes, The numbers I used before represent the different tones. Dave gave a very good example. As to chinese application, you can download a free chinese support software from NJ star website (www.njstar.com). But I failed to understand what Curb said in his first message here. Appearently, "Tung ting 1 pu pu 2 moo shu 2 xi 3..." are not ping ying used in mandrin. Ru2 guo3 ni3 you3 wei4 ti2, qing3 zhao3 wo3 | ||
