Our Jeep was parked at the bottom of the driveway and when we went to use it this AM discovered all the locks were punched out and the ignition punched in. (totally undrivable) They must have been scared off by something since we still have it! The police said that there was another attempted Jeep theft last night on Prospect, also unsucessful. I live on Ridgewood. He said that they are out in force now looking for Jeeps. Couldn't say why, it must be the "car of the month" to steal. He also said that if we had the "Club" on the steering wheel that they wouldn't have even bothered trying. Guess they really do work. Unfortunately the "Club" was on the passenger seat floor. You can bet it is on now in case they decide to come back tonight and finish the job! |

My car was once stolen in Philadelphia. The police recovered it (an absolute miracle; they got it back before I even knew it was missing) and the ignition had been ripped out. I was able to drive it home by jamming a phillips screwdriver into the hold where the ignition was. If it had been a manual transmission I wouldn't have been able to drive. |

Ejt, Ours is a Sport, I guess they a looking for any kind of Jeep. I am going to look at Condos today, have to get out of here anyway because of the tax increase. This just gave me some additional incentive. (Not that a Condo is any safer) |

Don't be so quick to rely solely on the Club. These are (usually) competent thieves we're talking about, and they think nothing of sawing through your steering wheel, then removing the Club, and continuing on with their work unhampered. I prefer to go with the "Car Lock" device, which is a hardened steel lock for the brake pedal. In most cars, the brake must be engaged to put the car into "Drive" from "Park", and this gizmo prevents the brake pedal from being pressed, thus your car may be broken into, and even started up, but if they can't move it anywhere, they can't steal it! The location of the device (below the brake pedal) leaves little operating room for thieves to try and crack it, so most give up and depart without your Jeep, or Acura, or whatever... ...and yes, according to local police, the Jeeps are the hot car of the moment... |

Nursie, I am sorry to hear about your situation. both re: your car (I didn't know you had a Jeep), and the tax increase. I heard that there are thieves in the Wyoming/Ridgewood area, stealing cars that the owners have left warming up in their driveways (I know, people think this area is safe to leave an unlocked car running, while they dash inside to finish getting ready, drinking coffee, etc.) |

Nursie...talked to 3 other folks in town who are thinking about leaving too. Like me (and you too I guess) they just can't justify paying the increase. Best of luck to you. |

Thanks Overtaxed, looked at Condos and saw some really nice, brand new ones for people over 55. They were very reasonably priced. Taxes---$3400! |

About five years ago, I was living at the S.O. Mews and had a Honda Prelude, which then was the "car of the month." It was stolen, but recovered after a few days, completely wrecked. The insurance company decided to restore it (big mistake). After getting the car back, I used a club while deciding whether to sell it or put an alarm in (the whole back seat had been entirely filled with dirty diapers and the smell lingered). Two days after I had it back, it was stolen again - they had broken the club. The police recovered it in Irvington and locked it in the police garage, but the thieves managed to break in and steal it from there. It was eventually recovered again, but it caught fire while I was driving it on Route 10, (apparently they had cracked the engine block) so I got rid of it for good. Moral of the story - if they want your car they will get it. |

Nursie...when I tell people what my taxes are going to be they look at me like I have two heads! That's a lot of incentive to get out! |

We had our Jeep stolen from the Pathmark parking lot about three years ago. It was noon time, broad daylight. We got lucky. There was only enough gas in it for a trip to the Short Hills Mall, where they dropped it off and stole another one. Damage wasn't too bad. |

>>The police recovered it in Irvington and locked it in the police garage, but the thieves managed to break in and steal it from there. This reminds me of my North Philadelphia story. After the police found my car they put it in their lot at the precinct at Temple University. This lot had an imposing fence around it with many locks and razor wire around the top of the fence, but the cops still had disconnected the distributor from my car to make it that much tougher to steal. I was impressed. I suppose if you have the nerve, a police impound lot is a good place to look for cars to steal. Many of them already have the locks removed and alarms disabled. |

Mem, the thieves probably felt bad leaving the dirty diapers and stole it again to clean it out for you. |

Ejt - Don't you just love it when thieves are thoughtful? Warms my heart, especially when I was on fire on Route 10. |

It looks like someone wants to buy a Jeep and put in an order. As for the Club, it might dissuade casual thieves, but pros can get through it in a second, just like a bike lock, and not by using a saw. I won't say how, of course. |

Overtaxed, Our friends and family have been stunned regarding our taxes for years, and more so now. BUT we do not give a damn what they think. What someone else thinks is not in any way an incentive to make a choice to leave, or have an effect on any other choice in our lives for that matter. We believe they are certainly just as screwed up as we are, even if their taxes are lower! Now I feel an urge to start laughing hysterically like Eyespy! Thank you and good night. |

I need a new Jeep - where can I park mine to get it stolen. This is so much easier. We used to have to drive to Newark to make this happen |

The answer is obvious for all to see. Buy a car no one wants to steal. I can leave my 1978 Checker just about anywhere, doors open, key in ignition and not worry. Seriously, I thought the car theft wave had died. I guess not. And I am not going to buy a jeep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Ihateice: this board is for South Orange as well. Also, others read this board to get a feel for a town they might want to move to or to reminisce about a town they grew up in but no longer live in. As far as I know, the owners of this board have not created any residency requirements. Why would you? Bacata |

Our Jeep Cherokee Sport was stolen right out of our driveway on Boyden back in January. It was recovered the next day in Irvington and eventaully totalled by the insurance company. According to the police report, the perps were driving around in another Jeep they had just stolen from S.O. No sense in buying another one. |

The frustrating thing about stolen cars is that they do not get chopped up and sold for parts which you might understand the motive - MONEY. No, it is the thrill of joyriding someone else's car, ruining it, and then dumping it. |

Use your spellcheck again, please. It doesn't matter what you typed in. What matters is where you are. As a friend of mine would say, "wherever you go, there you are." Changing the place doesn't change the person, as you amply demonstrate. Bacata |

Thanks, Rheims. It was also the semi-official school motto for New College in Sarasota, Florida back in the late 60's/early 70's. That's where my friend picked it up. Bacata |

Last week the News Record ran a short blurb about 3 Jeep thefts in Maplewood. They reported the police urge Jeep owners to install "kill" switches. |
