We are remodeling our basement and are looking for ideas for the ceiling other than sheetrock or the 2’X 2’ pop up tiles. We need access to water valves and a few electrical splice boxes. Does anyone know of an alternative to the two choices above? Thanks

Your limited to a drop cieling if your looking for access. Did you consider relocating the electrical and pipes? Michael K. Mc Kell

I have a feeling this might not be legal because of fire codes, but I have been in a couple of houses recently where the homeowner stretched muslin or burlap fabric across the ceiling, stapling it at the joists. In one case they let it sag a little between joists, covering irregularities and giving a tent like feel. It looked pretty good and certainly was cheap and will allow access to piping and electrical boxes without too much trouble. |

I agree. I too have seen people do just that. It's not a bag lok and is CHEAP. Michael K. Mc Kell

At Jagger Lumber, you can buy a plastic panel, white, with small holes all across it. 6" wide and you can staple them up to build an overlapped connected ceiling. If you ever need access, they can be pulled back down and then replaced. They will not help if you wanted to hide the pipes and stuff that hang below the joist. For that you need to do a drop. The holes allow the joists to breath. |

I was once in a finished basement that did not have a finished ceiling, and it looked great. They painted all the pipes and the wood and whatever else was hanging from the ceiling. It gave it a loft-like feel. |

I've seen the treatment shoshannah speaks of...and the contractor who did my re-build suggested similar if I remodeled my basement. I am cursed with low height (6'2") and they said a spray on texture finish was legal and could basically be sprayed on everything giving it a clean 'finished' look without blocking access at all. When I get around to the basement room, I think it's going to be a home theatre space, so I am thinking its a great way to handle it, and I can get it in any color I want (which might end up black) ROC |

Thank you all for your feedback. We have decided to go with the sheetrock ceiling drop the electrical splice boxes and install an access hatch for the water valve. |
