I had a leak from my shower into the ceiling of the living room. Has any body ever claimed any thing like this on their homeowners insurance? Whats the chance that the insurance premuims will go up?

I had half of the ceiling in my breakfast nook cave in from exactly that. Shower was right above that area. Homeowners paid. They won't pay though if it is caused by a leaking or broken pipe. (I don't think so, anyway.)

Emmie,

If a leak from your shower caused the ceiling to come down, and insurance paid for it, why would you say "they won't pay if it is caused by a leaking or broken pipe?"

What else could have caused the ceiling in your house to come down?

My understanding is; if a pipe or hose or faucet breaks, or a washing machine or dishwasher fails and causes a flood, your homeowners insurance would pay for it. If your basement floods because of a severe storm, then your homeowners will NOT cover it.

We had a leaky/broken pipe which damaged our kitchen ceiling and homeowners paid. My understanding ws that they paid because the pipe was leaking and wouldn't have paid if it was leaking through the tiles or around the tub.

US:
The water was coming from under the tub, the shower pan. No pipes were damaged!

The thing that leaks (roof, pipes) generally is not covered. The damage caused by the leak (wall, ceilings) generally is. Wierd distinction, but pretty status quo. I've both leaking roof & leaking tub. Walls & ceilings were paid for by insurance; tub & roof were my cost. Never had my premiums go up. Overall, we've had very few claims.

As usual, Greentree is right on the money.
I had a pipe blockage AND a leaking pipe last Feb. The entire kitchen ceiling had to go. Insurance paid for the repairs of the damaged ceiling. Even had them pay for some electric code upgrades in the ceiling wiring. Check if your policy has the code upgrade clause. They also paid for the blockage work. What they do not cover is the actual plumbing to repaid the broken pipe. My problem went on for weeks and cost $6K because they could not find the problem and had to replace the ceiling 3 times. I hope you have better luck.
