There's a proposed soccer dome, similar to the one up in Montclair (and run by the same folks), on the empty piece of the Durkee property. The owners of the property (union tool) had a meeting with the neighborhood a few weeks ago. If it's as nice as the facility up in Montclair, it will be a great addition to the neighborhood. |

Mr. Ryan: Thanks for the info. I agree that this type of facility would be a great addition to town and Ashley Hammond (sp) and his people are first class. |

I really hope that tons of people flock to the east side of town and drive the real estate prices way up. That way, we can do another revaluation, and us west siders will get a reduction. The town becomes even more desirable, and I get a tax break in the future. How can I lose? |

That's the spirit, Malone! I, too, would love to see our property values rise. And with the reval an ongoing process, you won't have to wait 20 years! Bacata |

OK, so far we have trying to attract artists, etc to Maplewood and a new sports facility. Any other ideas folks? I have been lurking around this board for the last month or so and there are certainly a lot of creative people here. If a meaningful revival of the eastern parts of town is going to take place some out of the box thinking is going to have to take place. |

East coast HQ for Microsoft or Boeing! |

I have a mental image of an airborne mobile HQ for Boeing but I suspect that some might find that interefering with the quality of life in Maplewood? Just flights of fancy, don't mind me! Bacata |

Can you do anything else in a soccer dome other than soccer? |

Good ethnic (reasonably priced) restaurants will always lure me to a new neighborhood, as well as a good produce market. For example, I would love a Vietnamese restaurant on Springfield Avenue. |

I would love to see a good produce market as well. The kind you see in Queens. Also, a good butcher shop would be a welcome. |

If more restaurants go in (seems like people are looking for good Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc) then maybe another movie theatre would be good. I miss the old theatre (what was the name?) that was tucked in next to the Home Depot. Bloomfield ave is a very happenin' place in Montclair; it seems that Springfield ave could follow suit. |

I think you are referring to the Lost Picture Show. It showed foreign and independent films that were not in wide release, mostly in Manhattan and a handful of theatres outside of the city. There has been mention on this board in the past to bring a similar type theatre to Springfield Ave. Also ethnic restaurants, a bookstore, and a supermarket have been discussed. |

I'd love a great big ole bookstore. i know we all want the small independant ones, but .... a big ole Borders would do me right. How about some something like Chelsea Market. Cool place with nice butcher, produce, specialty food, fish market. |

The Lost Picture Show was great and it is sorely missed. Especially, the free coffee which you could take to your seat and enjoy. Not to be a spoil sport, but would that soccer dome be tax exempt? What sort of satellite businesses would it generate? We need ratables!! A bookstore and another movie would be great. |

For the people living near by: A bakery... a variety store (5 and 10)... a hardware store with personal service... a place to buy fabric, yarn, patterns and other needlecraft supplies... men's, women's and children's clothes in a moderate price range ... a crafts cooperative with open stock that also takes commissions ... a few restaurants or cafes with table seating that you could bring a child to ... specialty food stores (cheese, fruit and vegetables, health food)... |

Latest quote...."it's too bad the Hobby Store moved to that side of town...I won't send my kids there". Kind of gives you the mindset of some people....so spruce up the Ave., these people will refuse to shop there anyway. |

Harold, I really don't care if a few racist or snooty folks won't shop on the Avenue. I do and will as do my friends who live on the "west" side of town. So we would like the Ave to be a nicer place for all. Bacata |

Don't worry about Springfield Avenue. I'll be opening a nice bar and restaurant there, called "Ye Mem's Olde Shloppe". That'll spruce up the avenue immediately. |

There used to be the Maplewood Public House (I think it was called), on Springfied Ave between Burnett and Boyden but that appears to be abandoned. It actually had pretty good food and it was nicely fixed up inside. Didn't see many folks from the other side of town in there drinking Martinis though! It changed names a few times, became a blues bar and then closed. I still think a couple of more hair and nail salons would be a good addition. Perhaps Nakille and her crosstown friends would come for a coif! I'm pretty sure O'Riley's on Millburn Ave. is in Maplewood. But if it's liquor you want, try Jeromes BrassTown Liquors on Springfield Ave. They have an excellent selection of Ripple wines and you can get most any flavor Mohawk Brandy in a half pint. Brown bags are given free! |

Joancrystal.....about your posting today.. FOR PEOPLE LIVING NEAR BY: Did you mean it would be nice now......or were you looking back (to those Good Old Days) when we had all that..and more, but lost out in the end. Cfa..check with the folks at Town Hall and find out how many class "B" liquor licenses are still out there. Nakaille...you're right, making Springfield Avenue a nicer place would be a wonderful thing. And we all know that Topf's Pharmacy, Summit Bank, Rite-Aid, just to mention some of the places where everyone shops when on the Avenue, would really love the concept. Unfortunately, in order for a concept to fly, it must first leave the ground. |

Thetruth07040..back in the early '60's we had the Maplewood Inn. The property is now occupied by Apters Funeral Chapel. The tavern busniess moved across the street and became Maplewood Tap Room for a good many years...after that, who knows, blues bar, red neck..whatever. |
