I've searched the Attic for advice on a local
cabinet maker. No luck.
I do NOT want a 'kitchen designer'. I am an architect and can manage the design part myself. Though I'd love too - desiging my own cabinets is not in the budget nor the timeline.
I want a simple shaker style door, inset flat panel, concealed hinges. We are dealing with 17' linear feet of counter top (inlcuding the range, the sink and the refrigerator). No top cabinets. I just received a quote for $6500 and that seems outrageous to me for such a small area.

Is there anyone in the area you recommend? Or a
carpenter that does this sort of thing?

Jg, what is included?

Just the cabinets? Installation? Countertop? Demo? Sheetrocking? Moving Plumbing?

Just for the cabinets without installation the figure is very high unless you are going with top quality custom cabinets with tons of options.

Bob,

Nothing is included. Not the countertop, not installation. We've done the demo ourselves and
have a plumber onboard.

They are solid maple cabinets, but no bells and whistles. The only 'extra' was a special cutlery drawer. We're just talking cabinets, drawers, and doors.

I guess I'm looking for a smaller company or local person who does this sort of work. Granted, I'm pickier than most (the architect anal-retentive personality thing) but I am also willing to compromise.

Most of my frustation lies in the fact that it seems so hard to find true 'craftsman' these days.
(I have to laugh at myself...I'm 34 - what days am I talking about exactly)

JG--- check out http://www.crown-point.com They are a cabinet company located in New Hampshire that sells direct. We've had our cabinets (cherry, raised panel, inset doors) for several years, but when we priced around, they were significantly less expensive than local companies. Their work is beautiful and they were a pleasure to deal with.

Maaaa,

Those are beautiful cabinets!

I've already contacted them for an estimate - we shall see.....I guess the reality of it is once again - my champagne taste and beer budget

JG, if worse comes to worse since the cabinets you appear to want are a fairly common design and material you can look at stock and semi-custom lines for a third the price.

Bob,

I just had to share this with you...

So we went to Expo last night - you know
to price the stock stuff. Seems you can't sit down with someone even to price until you agree to pay $750 to a 'designer'.
Therein lies my problem!
What to do when YOU are the designer. There is just no way I am paying anyone money to do my job.
UGGGGH

Seems like my hope that there would be something out there in between IKEA or MDF board and custom - is sinking.

JG-
We just had a huge fight with Expo about this issue. We had a coupon to waive the $750 design fee that we got when they first opened. It has no expiration date. We told them at the time that we were a couple years away from doing our kitchen & they said (at the time) "no problem". We went in a couple weeks ago & were told they would not honor the coupon, since it has been so long. Then, they told us that we shouldn't worry, since you get the $750 back if you order more than $5000 worth of cabinets. I told them that they were missing the point; that they needed to honor the coupon. We decided that we didn't need to deal with Expo at all. They had a really bad attitude when they were "trying" to get the business. Can you imagine what it would be like to work with them once they have the order? Ugh!

JGT --

I have not done this in this part of Jersey -- but here is my experience.

I've bought a number of cabinets -- for current and previous house -- at Somerville Lumber on Route 22 (a little far from here, but was near my prior house).

They have a great kitchen and bath showroom. You sit down with them, look at options, hardware, finishes, etc. They have helped me do the layout when I was unsure, other times I ordered exactly what I needed. (no charge for this!)

Also ordered custom fabricated solid counters/sinks from them twice.

They have many brands on the floor and can get others, too.

Oh -- they do deliver to S Orange, no charge.

Probably there is a "full service" lumber/kitchen/bath place that is closer, of course.

I found their pricing pretty good, too.

Good luck -- Pete

I have never ordered kitchen or bath stuff from them, but I have always gotten good and knowledgeable service at Jaeger Lumber on Morris Avenue in Union. The added advantage is that they are about ten minutes from Maplewood. Take Burnett to Morris and hang a left. They are about a half mile down the road on the right.

There's a guy out on Rt. 46 -- I think in Parsippany -- who runs a shop called Cabinets Direct. You can just purchase the cabinets from him using your own design. I went in there once upon the recommendation of a friend who worked with him. We ended up not using him because, unlike you, we needed design services and did not like his designs. But he carries a lot of lines of custom and semi-custom cabinetry. I think he has a website. Also, Jaeger carries a line called CWP, which was rated a "Consumers Best Buy" for all-wood custom cabinetry by Consumers' Reports. As you can tell, I've done a bit of research.

Here are a few shops that do custom cabnetry in NJ (not really local) that could probably do what you want. I have never spoken with or used any of them, so I can't recommend. Let us know if you contact any of them and how they work out.

Ya Know . . .

For a lot less than expo, for a plain style cabinet that you speak of . . . home depot did an amazing job of measuring and then helping me put the order together .... I handled the install on my own (sort of).

And since the $100 comes off the price of the cabinet purchase it didn't feel like paying someone to design.

I know home-depot can be a pain in the butt sometimes but it was pretty painless for me.
