My living room and dining room ceilings are cracking and peeling. How do I repair the sections where the paint is falling off causing an uneven surface? Any ideas how to fix the cracks as well. Also I have always wondered why the ceilings have a 12" x12" grid like pattern below the surface. The house was built in 1941.

The 12 x 12 grid pattern has me stumped, but probably the best way is to sheetrock over the exisiting ceiling given the damage seems pretty extensive.

Agree with bobk. You'll find your self repairing the cracks again in the near future.
