Two questions: 1. Anyone have experience doing a total rehab of your landscaping (we cannot afford to do everything at once, but want a master plan so we do things correctly as we can afford it). Did you hire a landscape architect or designer for the "big picture"? Recommendations? Cost? 2. We need to level the property first. Anyone have experience re-grading your backyard? Is it a do-it-yourself kind of thing? THANKS! |

Patrick, I can help you a bit with Question #1. We're also about to do a total rehab of our landscaping along the front foundation of our home, including shifting the front walkway and eliminating another walkway, ripping out all the old overgrown shrubs (transplanting some, getting rid of others), and planting a hedge. In the backyard, we're going to be creating a large patio with some leveling and drainage put in. The company that will be handling all this is a landscape architect in Cranbury. It's a husband and wife team that have been in the business for 40 years. In our two meetings with them so far, we've been enormously impressed by their energy, experience and ideas, not to mention enthusiasm. The guy must have taken 30 photos of our house and yard on the first visit, then came back with a total rendering and plan on the second visit. We are meeting with them against next weekend to go over the budget. THe idea is not to necessarily do all this stuff this year, the first year, but to phase some things in over several years. I do think we're going to have to spend a fair amount, at least $20K or so. Not sure if that's typical or what, but we have a very big property and there's a lot of neglect to correct. The patio alone will be about 30 feet by 25 feet.Anyway, based on my dealings so far I am totally impressed with this company. The guy is Bob Ott, CLA (certified landscape architect), at 609-395-1366. He does consultation, plans, specifications, and installation/building. Worth a call. Personally, I have to say I am very excited now for spring! Good luck! |

Patrick, Answer to question #2: If the yard is not big and your are not afraid of physical labor and the yard doesn't need to much of a re-grading you can rent a roto-tiller(sp) if the yard is really big and you have to make a major change in the grade you could rent a bobcat or backhoe and do it yourself? This is a lot easier then tilling the yard the bobcat or backhoe will run you between $200.00 and $300.00 per day. |

Barbara Stern on Roosevelt (she's in the phone book) relandscaped the front of our house. She provided us with a lovely blueprint and arranged for all the planting. We were thrilled with the results, especially since I had lots of demands (no rhodies, must have a climbing rose, must have hydrangeas, no deer plants, no pink azeleas, etc). We asked for low maintenance and all I do every year is pull off the dead daffodil leaves. Anyway, you might want to call her about an estimate. |
