La Isla on Washington Street in Hoboken isn't nearby, but I'd highly recommend it.

Mi Bandera (My Flag) is in Union City, north of Hoboken. I think they're on 32nd Street. You may even see El Duque there -- it's his home away from home.

North Newark probably has some good ones, too. Sorry, I don't know any specifics. I'll ask around at work. (I had some really fine Jamaican/Trini food at a work party recently, ordered from a place in East Orange. Tender, flavorful oxtails and curries and excellent rice and beans. Mmmm, my mouth is watering just writing this!)

Mi Bandera is definitely my first choice too! Head for the Lincoln Tunnel and get off 495 at the Kennedy Boulevard exit. Their churrasco is THE BEST. Also in that same neighborhood is Bergenline Ave, which is the NY version of Miami's Little Havana. Try Las Palmas.

I posted a message in another section trying to locate a good Puerto Rican restaurant, but I also love Cuban food. So I was glad to find this message. Anyone know about a good Puerto Rican place? Also trying to find calabaza, culantrillo, and other Puerto Rican foods to cook my own. Any good markets for these? Would love to find a market like La Marketa in NYC, but in the Maplewood area.
Thank you!

Mi Bandera (see above) is actually varied Latin-American. The grill is Argentinian, for example, and the Arroz con Pollo is available Cuban or Colombian style. They have a really good size latin market (produce and dry goods) downstairs.

Good Luck!

Mi Bandera is ok. But if you're going to Union City- La Grand Via, El Artisano and Latin American Cafeteria are much better restaurants. They are located between 40th-45th street on Bergenline Ave.

Not really Cuban or Puerto Rican, but has anyone else discovered Burnet BBQ on Burnet in Union? It's soooo good. Great ribs and chicken and of course, Portuguese sausage BBQ. Prices are so reasonable for what you get! check it out. Passed it for two years until trying it...always packed at night.

I have apologized to Duncanl for my response to his/her request for information about Puerto Rican food/music, which was posted in the "non-controversial" section. This recommendation hopefully will serve as proof of my sincerity. Zafra/3rd and Willow/Hoboken

Had dinner at Zafra on Monday night and it was great as usual. I also love Burnet Barbecue.
