Does anyone have have suggestions/advice for wall mounting of a 42 inch plasma screen on plaster wall, my other is above the fireplace into plaster covered brick. Has anyone installed a plasma screen on a plaster wall or into brick? I would also like to install all cables behind/within the wall. All advice welcome. |

Sylad, Hanging the screen on a plaster lath wall isn't too hard, if you can't line it up with studs, then toggle bolts will give you a good hold with sufficient capacity. Getting the wiring 'behind' the walls is also not too hard. Depending on the age of your house (mine is 75+) and insulation issues (interior v exterior walls) the wire runs are easy to do with 'low voltage' boxes available at the home depot. (You can even generally add a 110v outlet in the right place. The hardest part of this is usually cutting the holes as I've found that in the houses I've worked in the composition of the plaster and lath dulls just about every blade I've ever tried in my roto-zip. (It can however with sufficient blades be done!) Email me direct if you need more info ROC |

I hung my TV pretty easy. First I connected a board to the wall that had a 45 degree cut in it. (Like hanging cabinets). Connected the opposite board to the TV. This helped me hit the studs easy with out trial and error (not very good at this sort of thing). Seeing as how I knew where the studs were I could easily cut a hole in the wall between them. Then cut a much smaller hole near the floor. I then used a snake (hanger) tied a string to it and fed it up the wall until it got to the hole behind the TV. I tied the Cables to the string and pulled them down to the hole near the floor. All of my Stuff (VCR,DVD,TIVO,PS2,Xbox) are all located just to the left of where the cables came out of the wall, so I didn’t have to go side ways inside the wall.

Sylad -- I have the Panasonic TH-PWD5UY. It is absolutely wonderful. 42 inches of beauty. There's no speaker, so you'll need a home theater set up. It's not HDTV, but IMO you don't need it. Plus, the HD screens don't do as well as non-HD screens with DVDs, which are much more prominent than HD broadcasts at this point. (Incidentally, there's an HD DVD system in the works that would solve that problem, but it's a way off yet). I did a tremendous amount of research before making my decision, and I could not be happier with my purchase. There's a ton of info out there if you want to dig through it. You may want to start here: http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/index.html I also recommend you buy it in the city at Sound City on 45th street. Their price was $300 less than I saw anywhere else, including the online retailers.

Yossarian---thanks, did you purchase the extended warranty? Did you install it your self or did Sound City do it for you?

Sylad -- I'm pretty sure I did get an extended warranty, but to be honest, I can't remember. As for my installation, I put mine on a stand. I don't like the idea of putting it on the wall, and we didn't have the right room for a wall install anyway. I believe the screen should be at eye height when you're sitting down, and that would look odd on the wall, IMO. On the other hand, my stand looks and works great, and my screen is at the perfect height. FYI, here's the stand I have: http://www.racksandstands.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=BB0028&catid=54
