What does this mean that water is flowing back into the house thru the lowest drain? It's not clean water and there's lots of it coming in thru basement shower drain. i am really panicked! thanks, marcia

Ugh. It might mean some nearby sewer drains are blocked with leaves/snow and backing up.

A previous owner of my house removed the basement toilet after a particularly bad sewer backup that affected the whole neighborhood when the snow fell and the curbs were full of leaves.

Not sure what you can do in the immediate term.

Call the Maplewood DPW immediately, or Police to get them on the weekend to report a possible blockage in the sanitary(sewage) sewer in the street.

This does sound like a pooh issue.
Is the home on the bottom of a hill?
Call and address this a.s.a.p. The thaw this week will bring much more unwanted water.

In MW we have storm sewers for ground water runoff and sanitary sewers for waste. To the best of my knowledge they are not connected. Because of this I doubt the snow storm is to blame.

Torne is probably correct. There is somesort of blockage in the sanitary sewer, possibly in your connection to the sewer. Roto-Rooter time?

The town came and fixed it -- I greeted them like heroes and jumped up and down when it was fixed. The sewer was blocked.
