Reports from the two experts regarding the revaluation are now available for review at Town Hall and the two branches of the Maplewood Library. Assessor's Review - As I reported on Wednesday night, we received about 825 requests for Assessor's Reviews. As of that date, approximately 40 percent were reviewed and decisions were made regarding adjustments. If an adjustment was made to a property, that information was entered into the data base and will be reflected on the March 1st assessment postcard. Although the revaluation numbers have been submitted to the County Tax Board, the Assessor's Review is continuing. If during a review of a property, an adjustment in value is found to be warranted, the property owner be contacted about the procedure to change the value at the Tax Board. If no adjustment is being made to the property, a letter will be sent to the property owner from Town Hall. We expect that the Assessor's Reviews will continue for the next few weeks. On or about March 1st, all property owners will receive a postcard listing the assessed value of her/his property for 2001. The post card is the official notice of your property's assessment and supersedes any letters you have received from Certified Valuations. Anyone not in agreement with the assessment listed on the post card has 45 days or until April 15th to file an appeal with the Essex County Board of Taxation. The Tax Board will hear the appeal and make a decision. If anyone is not in agreement with that decision, she/he has a right to appeal to the Tax Court. |
