Comparing the combined performance of South Orange - Maplewwod School District 8th Graders on the Spring 1999 & Spring 2000 Grade 8 Proficiency Test in Language Arts Literacy with those of all school districts with middle schools in South Orange-Maplewood School District's socio-economic grouping (District Factor Group I) the rankings are:

PARTIALLY PROFICIENT - DFG I

1999 - Of 392 SO-M students, 15.1% scored PARTIALLY PROFICIENT compared
to 3.1% of the 14,656 DFG I 8th Graders.
None of the 87 DFG I districts had a greater percentage in this category.

2000 - Of 420 SO-M students 12.9% scored PARTIALLY PROFICIENT compared
to 4.2% of the 15,143 DFG I 8th Graders.
One of 87 DFG I district had a greater percentage of students in this category.


ADVANCED PROFICIENT - DFG I

1999 - Of 392 SO-M students, 8.2% scored ADVANCED PROFICIENT compared
to 15.9% of the 14,656 DFG I 8th Graders.
75 of 87 DFG I districts had a greater percentage of students in this category.

2000 - Of 420 SO-M students 6% scored ADVANCED PROFICIENT compared to
15.42% of the 15,143 DFG I 8th Graders.
78 of 87 DFG I districts had a greater percentage of students in this category. One had the same percentage as SO-M.

* MEAN - DFG I

1999 - The 392 SO-M students had a MEAN score of 221.2 compared to a MEAN of 232.8 for the 14,656 DFG I 8th Graders.
85 of 87 DFG I districts had a higher MEAN score than SO-M.

2000 - The 420 SO-M students had a MEAN score of 221.5 compared to MEAN of 231.4 for the 15,143 DFG I 8th Graders.
84 of 87 DFG I districts had a higher MEAN score than SO-M.


Compared with the 60 districts with middle schools (including SO-M) in DFG GH, the next
lower socio-economic grouping, the rankings are:

PARTIALLY PROFICIENT - DFG GH

1999 - Of 392 SO-M students, 15.1% scored PARTIALLY PROFICIENT compared
to 5.3% of the 10,306 DFG GH 8th Graders.
Two of 60 DFG GH districts had a greater percentage of students in this category.

2000 - Of 420 SO-M students 12.9% scored PARTIALLY PROFICIENT compared to 4.2% of the 10,500 DFG GH 8th Graders.
Four of 60 DFG GH districts had a greater percentage of students in this category.

ADVANCED PROFICIENT

1999 - Of 392 SO-M students, 8.2% scored ADVANCED PROFICIENT compared
to 11.5% of the 10,306 DFG GH 8th Graders.
40 of 60 DFG GH districts had a greater percentage of students in this category.

2000 - Of 420 SO-M students 6% scored ADVANCED PROFICIENT compared to
15.42% of the 10,500 DFG GH 8th Graders.
41 of 60 DFG GH districts had a greater percentage of students in this category.

MEAN

1999 - The 392 SO-M students had a MEAN score of 221.2 compared to a MEAN of 229.1 for the 10, 306 DFG GH 8th Graders.
58 of 60 DFG GH districts had a higher MEAN score than SO-M.

2000 - The 420 SO-M students had a MEAN score of 221.5 compared to MEAN of 231.4 for the 10,500 DFG GH 8th Graders.
51 of 60 DFG GH districts had a high MEAN score than SO-M. One had the same MEAN.


Data taken from the NJ Report Card and the "March 1999 [and 2000] Grade Eight
Proficiency Assessment (GEPA) State Summary" published by the NJ Department of Education in December 1999 & January 2001.

Scores of Special Education and Limited English Proficient students were not included in the calculations. Scores were reported as: "Partially Proficient (100-199)", "Proficient (250-249)", "Advanced Proficient (250-300)"

This is so dense, that you need a laser knife to slice through it.
Can you reduce this to something parents can understand, i.e., the twenty second sound bite, and do it before the next Board of Education election?
