I am suppose to move to Maplewood. The taxes are high, and I don't read too many positives on this site. I also drive around an see alot of kids that just don;t seem to fit the image that the realitor painted when describing this town. Now I read of a murder, and of high schoolers brawling on the streets. Some posters who've witnessed these fight sound frightened by these incidents. I drive east down Springfield near Maplecrest park and it looks scary. One thing I'd like to know is are the schools safe. Forgive me for asking, but are these African American kids causing these problems? What is the racial breakdown at the high school? Are there many minorities? Are there drugs? The town is so pictureque, but I see kids walking around that look like they walked from Jersey City or Newark. Am I going to have to worry about walking around the high school during certain hours of the day. Will I be able to use the park? I've also read that car theft is a problem. I now it not Polit Corr but I'm spending alot of cash and I want to know that I can raise a family here. Maybe the higher taxes aren't a bad thing. may the cash will cause some of the undesirables to move? Somebody help me. The stuff I read at this site is troubling. Flame me if you like, but please let me know your feelings on these issues. |

This is not a serious post; I recommend it be ignored. |

I agree with Chico. One thing for sure, if it is a serious post...I'd like to tell Very1 to stay where he or she is and don't even bother moving here! |

This is a good place to live. Yes it costs a lot to live here, but the people I have meet and the friends I have made are great people. Like 'any town' there are things that can and should be improved. There are lots of people in town, some are overly vocal about issues that are not as much concern as they make them out to be. Other concerns are real. This 'anonymous' board allows people to say things without retribution. A lot of what you will read here is greatly exaggerated. Now onto reality. Yes there recently was a murder in town. I believe that it was the first in 20 or more years. This murder remains unsolved. Concerned citizens and "everyone" wants this murder solved. Thousands of people are killed in America each year, 2 in 20 years is not a trend. There are parts of town that appeal to different communizes. They appeal either because of cost, taxes, neighbors or some other aspect that makes them appealing. got to go..... |

Very1, Maplewood is a lovely place where desirables are undesirable, and vice versa. Whereas some of the undesirables are quite desirable, the desirables can be very undesirable. While the views on this board may be unsavory, they are desirable, even if POSTED by undesirables. Their views are desired, however undesired the actual person may be. Likewise, savory views posted by desirables are also desired, unless they become sarcastic, in which case they surpass desirability and become necessary. (Unsavory sarcastic remarks by undesirable posters are also necessary.) |

Well said, John, even if not well said. But neither is this that I'm writing well-said. Either way, I completely agree, even if I must at times disagree absolutely. |

I'm thinking Veryl should move elsewhere. We are a mixed community of many types of differences. Not just racial. About 3 years ago, a family with two young girls bought a house in the Seth Boyden school district (before the charter school). They were appalled that their white daughters would go to school with so many children of colors, who had so many different cultures and languages. God forbid that those little girls learned anything about anyone who didn't look like them. Long story short ? They told the neighbors how upset they were about the school their kids would attend. We all ignored them, since our very mixed block does not tolerate discrimination. They moved. They lived on our block a whole 6 months. Veryl- this is not the community for you. |

Hey, everyone's entitled to their own opinion aren't they? Some valid points were mentioned. Not everyone wants to live in a mixed neighborhood. Not everyone wants to enroll their kids in a "questionable" school district. Just because I happen to like it here does not mean everyone else would. Just because someone might not like our particular situation here in Maplewood/South Orange does not mean they are a bad person. |

Mammabear...that's why Greenetree suggested that this is not the community for Very1. And you're right...everyone is entitled to their own opinion and Greenetree is giving theirs. Lighten Up! |

Look at the questions Very1 asked and think about them from the viewpoint of someone Black asking them. YOU NEVER KNOW!! NEVER ASSUME!! |

Pepper -- I'm not sure I agree that Very1 is African-American. He/she asked if African-Americans were causing the problems. Seems to me that an African-American wouldn't ask that question, nor would he comment about the kids looking like they came from Jersey City or Newark. |

To say that an African-American wouldn't ask a particular question... that seems to imply you know the motive behind the question -- a questionable assumption. |

Why wouldn't this be a serious post?? |

Evm, in one fell swoop very1 has introduced almost every single concern that has ever been expressed about maplewood, from crime to demographics to car theft. Over the last several years i've been reading this board, these posts show up from time to time and the only real result (and one has to suspect the intended result) is to inflame and incite passions which can bring out the most disaffected and angry of the participants to the board. I've no clue why anyone would want to do this; one can imagine ex-maplewoodians who want to reassure themselves that they have made the right choice in leaving, or minority posters that want to create evidence that our 'welcoming' environment doesn't survive even a minor scratching of the surface. One can imagine a ton of motives, but a sincere desire to join us in our community just doesn't jump out at you as a primary one. There are 10's of millions of lonely people on the net, and like children, if they can't get a positive response they will settle for a negative one. When they incite people to respond, in any fashion, they fill a need. It's easier to evoke negativity than other kinds of responses. Someone once described them as 'energy creatures' and the description is apt. They just suck the energy out of a virtual community by incessantly inciting flames. I'm not suggesting that very1 is any of those things, but you ask 'why wouldn't it be a serious post' and the answer is 'a million reasons'. |
