Did anyone notice that in the Essex County section of Tuesday's Star Ledger, two out of the three Crime Blotter articles were about Maplewood...both incidents on the East side of town? One was a chase of a stolen jeep on Burnett Ave. The other was a robbery AT GUNPOINT of a resident going into his home on Jacoby St. I've lived here for 40 years and just don't remember this level of crime or these type of violent crimes. Yesss I know that the times have changed but it still disturbs me to have people with guns holding people up this close to my home. Any car chases or armed robberies in The Village in recent memory? Has anyone considered starting some Neighborhood Watch Groups here? Perhaps if we we more active about reporting what we think is suspicious and dangerous and looking after one another it might help. |

Saw that myself.... Although the Jeep mentioned above was stolen somewhere else, does anyone know the extent of the Stolen-"Jeep"-wave in Maplewood? In the past few weeks, I've seen a few articles in the Ledger, a few in the News Record, and several posts. Can anyone connect the dots? |

The star-ledger calls the local police departments for updates. Usually there is one officer assigned to give out information to the press. Millburn avoids being in the news as much because the officer is not as forthcoming as some towns. Maplewood gives full disclosure and does not try to "hide " the bad news. I think when the crime statistics for the full year are printed, Maplewood and S. Orange are in the middle of the pack for essex county (not including Newark). The star-legder just does not have enough reporters to do the proper job. |

Folks, you can't get away from crime. The problem is we in Maplewood live near communities that are, or are considered high crime areas. The minute anyone sees a story about an incident in Maplewood the panic starts to set in that the town is going to the dogs. I moved here more than five years ago when the "undertone" was that Maplewood was going to be the next East Orange. Well frankly it isn't. As long as the people who live in Maplewood are decent law abiding citizens it will be a good place to live. As long as we support the local law enforcement officials in doing their jobs the word will get out that Maplewoodians don't tolerate nonsense. As long as our law enforcement officials equally apply the law to residents and nonresidents then we stand a shot at maintaining a community that is pleasant and relatively crime free. There will always be crime but we the residents of Maplewood have to be diligent in being involved to maintain the safety and quality of our community. If you know something is going that shouldn't report it, don't start thinking about fleeing to Chatham or Morristown because soon enough you'll be fleeing from Chatham and Morristown. |

Re: fleeing to Chatham to get away from crime. Some friends of mine in Chatham came out of their house one morning to find their Honda gone. Unfortunately, it is the same story a lot of different places, not just Maplewood. |

Pepper is right. It doesn't seem that the crime that is perpetrated in Maplewood has much to do with the folks who actually live in town other than them having things worth stealing. When you read the police section of the News Record or the Essex section of the Star Ledger, most of the crime stories seem to be about suspects who are from (or were chased into) Newark and Irvington. One rarely reads about a Maplewood resident being apprehended for doing something. Just the same, I have a jeep and I have started worrying every time it's out of the garage. It's frustrating. |

You all seem focused on the darn Jeep....a person was robbed AT GUNPOINT on Jacoby Street... in their doorway! I'm not suggesting that the perpetrators are from Maplewood but what does it matter where they are from?????? It's like people in Beruit saying it's not so bad because the ones firing the mortars aren't residents! I am trying to be positive but there is a very fine line between being positive and having your head in the sand. I'm also not suggesting that moving is the answer. Oh my! They stole a Honda in Chatham too! Have they had any armed robberies of thier residents lately?????????? |

Thetruth: probably. Even Madison has had a murder or two over the past decade. It IS terrible to be robbed at gunpoint. I know, it happened to me in Clifton years ago. Under serious stress I can still feel the barrel of the pistol at the back of my head. I was lucky, like the person on Jacoby I am still alive and the only injury was post-traumatic stress disorder (not a small price to pay but still, it could have been a lot worse.) But the sky is not falling. We should indeed keep these kinds of events in mind when we think about cutting municipal services to save a few tax dollars here and there. But what should have been done differently about this incident? Probably nothing. I still want to know whether the officer who didn't bother to take a report on the BB gun incident has been disciplined. That's the kind of attitude that leads to rising crime rates, in my opinion.
