My wife and I would like to go out for some good Thai food this weekend. We have been to the very expensive places in Millburn and Chatham. Both are good (Chatham better) but we would live to find a place that is a bit more reasonable. Thanks.

Morris Thai on Morris Ave. in Union is very good, and very reasonable. I was there this weekend, and it was about $30/person. It's also BYOB. You may need to call ahead for reservations, although you can usually get a table within 10 or 15 minutes.

Ashear - Montclair has the best. One is TupTim (reservations recommended if it's a large party)on Bloomfield Ave and the other one is up the block from that (decor has more of an american feel) and I'm blanking on the name. After coming from Chicago (years ago!)with the best and cheapest Thai food, Montclair is the way to go. Both are BYO and there is a liquor store right across the street. Catch a movie after!

Thai Chef is also on Bloomfield Ave in Montclair --- I love it.

I'll vote with Njjoseph on this one, and my bill was less than his! (About $40 for the two of us, appetizer and entree.) I admit, though, I haven't tried the Montclair ones.

BTW: A Taste of Asia (opposite Fresh Fields on Bloomfield in Montclair) is very nice for adventurous tastebuds. It's Malaysian.

Wish we could lure a Thai restaurant to Maplewood. My sole regret in leaving Brooklyn is not having Thai food at my doorstep.

k.

Have you tried the restaurant called "Enhance" in Millburn? Opened earlier this year. We've enjoyed the food and service a lot. It's on the same block as Futter's shoes, across the street from Basilico. Prices are reasonable and they adjust the spiciness of the food to your preference. Also will make off-the-menu food for picky teenagers who don't like Thai food!

Try "Penang" on Route 10. It is also Malaysian but has so many Thai and Vietnamese items that it's like going to three restaraunts at once (I mean that in a good way - not like the Chinese/Italian/American buffets one hears about!)

As I've mentioned before on this board, we make Thai meals at home at least 3 times a week. Penang is next door to Kam Man Foods and we always combine dinner with grocery shopping.

Make sure you try the Roti from the appetizers menu. Unbelievably good - Indian influenced, and you could never deep-fry like that at home.

Townie: Maybe Lemongrass would open a branch in Maplewood.

KMK or Musicme-

How are the prices at Penang?

I'm used to Lemongrass prices and find the Chatham, Millburn, and Montclair places to be high by comparison. Any idea?

I also vote for Morris Thai on Morris Ave in Union. The food is excellent, inexpensive and the service is also good. I have eaten there 4 times so far and have been very satisfied.

Penang is priced like a chinese restaurant; I have the menu right here! We buy Sing Ha beer by the case at the Wine Cellar in Milburn and take a couple bottles with us - so the tab doesn't include alcohol. (They don't have liquor anyway.) Appetizers are $2.95 - $7.95, House specials are $9.95 for chicken and lemongrass in a coconut curry - $13.95 for mango shrimp. The seafood dishes are more expensive they run $10.95 for squid in lemongrass sauce to $18.95 for Jumbo shrimp in "spicy Thai sauce". I did order the shrimp dish - it was awesome. The other beef, pork and vegetable sections average at $9.95 an entree.

This place is actually a chain with two branches in NYC and at least one in Philly. They don't take any credit cards but they do have an ATM inside the place! Everybody is happy. It is not at all as formal as New Main Taste in Chatham and it is very family friendly.

Ashear,

Lemongrass was actually my least favorite. There was one upstairs on 7th Ave. that I liked best.

Penang sounds awfully good. How far up Route 10 is it? On which side of the divide? Which big store to look for?

BTW, Jimmurphy, the Morris Thai in Union is not expensive. And Enhance in Millburn (not the Elephant Thai) is cheap.

Townie: I know the one you mean. It was good but Lemongrass was right around the corner from me.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think we may try one of the ones in Montclair so we can go to a movie too, but I do really want to try Penang.

Ashear - catch a movie at the Sony Megaplex on route 10 just past Peneng.

Townie - Head west on Route 10 past Wendy's, past McDonald's and just through the light with the Burger King (I'm getting ill.) Turn right into the driveway just past the light - there is some sort of Kawasaki dealer just before the driveway - and continue to the back of the "strip mall" you'll see it tucked into the corner.

Penang is in the shopping center just past the Home Depot (Westbound). Same shopping center as "Imagine That" and RxPlace (although I don't think it is called RxPlace anymore)

If you go to Peneng check out the great Asian Food Store in the same strip mall (Kam Man)

Great directions from all. I'll offer to take my husband for his birthday. And I'll check out the Asian food store for sure.

We ended up at TupTim in Montclair. Great food and not bad pricewise. Thanks all.

I thought that Elephant Thai on Millburn Ave was very good. Also, New Main Thai in either Chatham or Madison was very good.
