I've just returned from the 3rd graders' Invention Convention at Clinton School and wanted to express my sincere admiration and delight at these kids' efforts. Those of you who knock our school system should attend such an event. The inventions were nearly all ingenious, well thought out, and well built! (And most were genuinely kid-built too, from the looks of them.) The inventors were informed and enthusiastic about their work, and presented it politely to the parents and classmates who visited the Convention. Best of all was the PRIDE the children took in their accomplishments, and quite rightly too. Well done, 3rd graders! (And teachers too -- this is a long-term project which includes planning, experimenting, and recording the results. A clever way to work on a lot of skills.)

When my older child was at Clinton this and the 5th grade science fair were two of my favorite events. The children are encouraged to do something that interests them but they are also given the tools/ guidelines to work on the projects. As a parent, I only had to lend a hand when requested. My chief responsibility was to go to the store and buy supplies and then show up and look proud on the day of the presentations. I remember being so amazed at how neat and well thought out the 3rd graders inventions were that I was moved to write a note of praise to the principal that year. Yes this is one of the times when our district gets it right.

Ahhh, but will it improve test scores? Just kidding, it is a great event and the kids are justifiably proud.

I KNEW you were kidding, but yes, I think it MIGHT! If reasoning skills are required!

I had a very similar experience of pleasure at the Tuscan Invention Convention last year. We enjoyed our daughter's invention process and the convention at the end. I'm glad to hear that it seems to be a district-wide event (?)
