After living in Manhattan for two years, and Jersey City for three, I need to get further away from the city! I found a website where I could locate cities similar to each other by typing in zip codes; I typed in the zip code for my hometown in Illinois and Maplewood popped up. Subsequent visits have made me fall in love with your town. I would very much like to get an apartment there.

My boyfriend goes to Rutgers & he & I share a car so I need to find something close to the train station or jitney stop. Does anyone know how I can get an apartment in the village, or if any are available for April 1? Also, is the jitney free? Where can I find a map (not just a schedule) of the route? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a cool website! May I ask where in Illinois you're from (Evanston comes to mind) and what the URL for the website is?

Acb203,

Two suggestions I have (I'm sure others can provide you with better ones since I've lived here a short time) would be to 1. check the bulletin board at the train station in Maplewood {I often see apartments listed there) and 2. after checking the classifieds at this site to see what's available, post your request there.

Good luck to you!

You might want to check the Newark Star Ledger and the Maplewood/South Orange News Record. The MSN RealEstate site has an apartments for rent section, but I kind of doubt you would find anything there.

I know this is a keen observation of the obvious....

Bacata, I thought of Evanston also, my old home town.

Here's a link to the jitney schedule

http://www.maplewoodonline.com/jitney.shtml

and if you combine that with a map, (which you should be able to get online or from a realtor, you can see where to live.

Also, I'd recommend calling the News-Record and seeing how much it would cost to place an ad saying you want an apartment to rent. It might be well-worth the investment.

Call Maguires Clothing Store - 973-762-4062

He has apartments above his store in Maplewood Village and one of them is for rent. I do not know any details but I saw the for rent sign on the door.

Acb203 - you really have struck gold! You've got the mayor helping you find an apartment. Is this a great town or what?

Others are guessing Evanston, and that's a likely choice, but I'm wondering if you're from Oak Park, a town that Maplewood and South Orange have been using as a model of maintaining an integrated population.

Thank you all for your suggestions! My boyfriend and I have been operating as an apartment-hunting team... I look around on the Internet & read this message board while I'm at work, then call him and he drives out to Maplewood to investigate. We have mapped out the jitney schedule and that has really helped. I'm still wondering if the jitney is free... if not, what does it cost?

I have posted a message on this site's classified listings, and we peruse the Star Ledger daily. My boyfriend has scanned the message boards near the train station. He also stopped by Burgdorff (sp?) Realty. I have had bad experiences with realtors in Jersey City so any good words you have about the folks at Burgdorff would be appreciated. Also about Debaron Realty in Union, who seem to have a lot of Maplewood listings.

We are both from Downers Grove, IL, which is about 35 miles south and west from Chicago. While it certainly appears to look like Maplewood on the outside, I have a feeling that the DG population is significantly less integrated than that of Maplewood... which makes me want to move to Maplewood even more!

The website I used that brought me to Maplewood is www.homefair.com. When you go there, it should open up to the "moving" tab. Look for "features & articles" in the left hand column; click on "choosing where to live" under that. Then click on "community calculator." You have the option of choosing a city you want to live CLOSE to, but not IN (I chose Manhattan). The Community Calculator gives results based on population and age group percentages, household income distribution, educational attainment, and housing characteristics.

KMK: That is awesome (which one's the mayor?)!

Acb203,

They haven't updated the Government section of MaplewoodOnline. Mr. Vic DeLuca is now the Mayor of our fine city.

And the jitney is 50 cents a ride if you pay per ride. They sell passes inside the train station and at town hall. You can buy a yearly pass(maybe $25?)also.

The yearly is $50, and the half-year (July through December), is $25.

Hi, I was the person who was talking to you on the NJonline message board. I have Sovan Assoc's # I just didn't want to post it there so they did not get a zillion ridiculous phone calls. It is (973)763-3527 (unless it's changed, we moved out awhile ago). They own many of the village apartments like the ones above the coffee shop and the ones above the former burrito place. Another suggestion for you is just to walk around and ask the store owners, they often know when apartments are available. That's how we found ours.

JBB, KMK, NJJoseph, Phyllis: thanks! Turns out Sovan Assoc only has a 2-bedroom available. (not that that's important to you, but I thought if anyone else saw this conversation and was looking for a place to live...)

Did you see the listing on the classified board on this site? Sounded like a one br. available April 1. Good luck.

I'd seen the one posted 2/24, but not the 2/27 one... I guess I thought that the classifieds on the Maplewood / South Orange message board were the same as those on the Maplewoodonline home page. that's kind of confusing. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
