Hi all, Can anyone recommend a tile store with good selection and good prices in the area. Local? NYC? I tried Jasco on 22 and was unimpressed - mostly with the selection. EXPO was a bit pricey. We're specifically looking for 3"X6" "subway tile" for the walls and mosaic for the floor - trying to keep the "old-fashioned" look that made us love the house. J Thanks in advance, Jim |

You could try Good Olde Things in NYC. You should be able to get their address/number easily. They usually have plenty of subway tile that's been excavated. Of course, maybe that's not your thing. Ricciardi's design store on Springfield and the tile store on Springfield near Vauxhall may have have what you want or be able to get it. Try Springfield Ave. -- you won't regret it! :-) |

Njjoseph: Thanks for the reply. Is the stuff at Olde Good Things in good condition - no mortar or crazing of the glaze? Also, how are Ricciardi's prices and in-store selection? Which tile store on Springfield near Vauxhall? What's it near? Anyone else? Thanks, Jim |

Well, Good Olde Things is a mishmash of stuff, but you can probably pick the tiles you want. There will probably be crazing, as it's not new tile. It definitely will not look new. I've not bought tile from either store, just know they exist. To get to the tile store on Springfield, once you're on Springfield go towards Vauxhall. I think it's at the intersection of Millburn Ave., but my mind's eye is playing tricks. It's definitely on the left side of the street as you go towards Vauxhall. |

Speaking of tile, any recommendations for someone who can regrout an entire shower? |

It's a good do-it-yourself job. Go to www.hometime.com for instructions. Do you need to remove the grout, or has it been done already? That's the hardest part (not hard, but most time-consuming). |

Jim, this is very timely - this is just what we're now doing in 2 of our bathrooms. I located subway tile at Standard Tile on Rt. 10 in East Hanover. You can also get 1" hexagonal tiles, which is also very period. I'm dealing with Paula there, who is very nice and helpful. You might also want to check this website - it's a firm in California that specializes in historic tile designs. They sell subway tile as well, although it is thicker and more expensive than what you'll find in most tile stores ($5.xx per s.f. vs. $3.xx at Standard Tile). The website is great for design ideas, and we are using an adaptation of one of the designs I found there. http://www.designsintile.com/morewain1.html |

I bought some subway tile at Expo and thought it was ANYTHING but costly - around $8/sq. ft. They have a great selection and decent prices. I also like Virtue Tile in Summit on Broad Street. They also have beautiful stuff. And remember...sometimes you get what you pay for! Cheaper tile might be exactly that - cheaper! Good luck! |

World of Tile on 22 West (Hillside Ave-- you can get there by taking Meisel through Springfield) has that tile. Once you get past the extremely dated exterior (and interior) of the building, you can find a few things. I bought them about 2 years ago and I believe they were about $5 per sq. foot. They have several colors too. If you're patient, service is helpful, but sometimes it takes a few minutes. |

Wow! Thanks so much for all of the recommendations. NJJoe - I actually went by that place on Springfield over lunch. They could order the subway at $3.79/sf but didn't have mosaic. I just may use them. Janet-I'll check out Standard Tile - sounds good. I've seen that Designs-in-Tile site before - beautiful stuff. Their site seems to be down today but I'll definately check out that link that you provided. Mamma - Thanks, but $8/ft for plain white field tile is a little rich for my blood. Shh - I'll probably check World of Tile as well. The "several colors" comment has me interested as I'm thinking about off-white as well. Thanks again to all! Jim |

Njjoseph, Thanks, but I'd prefer to hire someone to do the job. It does involve removing the grout. Still looking for recommendations. Anyone had experience with a tile installer? |

I passed World of Tile yesterday and there's a "going out of business" sign in the window. |

I had a great experience at Short Hills Tile and Marble on Morris Turnpike. Machine made subway tile was $8sf. They have loads! And Susan Israel was so helpful. She had the staff of the whole store come in and help me pick my countertop, floor and tile combination--all for a $300 purchase that was probably their smallest sale of the year. A lovely place. |

Jim- I also had a great experience at STandard Tile on Rt 10 in E. Hanover. Price, selection and advice were all very good. JEM- We used Premiere Refinishing in Nutley (ask for Sal) to completely regrout and reglaze our tub/shower. Did a very nice, clean job, and everything looks new! |
