Happy Read Across America Day (and Dr Seuss's birthday)... Are many of you volunteering at your children's school today?

Excellent choice Jerry! I'm actually now reading The Trilogy again(for the gazillionth time!) The movie is supposed to be out this fall. I can't wait! The first animated movies from the 70's are a bit dated, but my 7-year-old daughter loves them!

Frodo Lives!

I just did a reread myself. Check the website and see the trailer, it looks great. Everything was filmed at once in New Zeeland, and they're doing postproduction on Fellowship now. Three movies over the course of the next three years, Christmas releases each one. I can't wait!

For my son's 4th grade class , I read from "The Trumpet of the Swan". My 4th grade techer read it to my class sometime during the last century, so I thought I'd pass it on. I think EB White wrote so beautifully-never a wasted word!

I read to a couple of terrific and well-behaved standard classes at SOMS.

Jerry, great website! What section of Fellowship did you read? There was a time (1960's I think) that it was required reading in school. Hopefully you got some kids interested!

I read the section of "The Shadow of the Past" where Gandalf explains to Frodo about the ring... the section that begins with Frodo asking Gandalf what the ring is, and that ends with Gandalf tossing it into the fire and reading "One Ring To Rule Them All..." in the firescript on the ring.

The trailer looks very cool; I am guessing that the big guy on stilts is Treebeard, and that the four hobbits shrinking back in fear is at Weathertop. The big battle in the trailer is Helm's Deep.

The movies are apparently fairly close to the books with only a couple of exceptions: they've ditched Tom Bombadil completely, and they have Arwen riding to war instead of just showing up to marry Strider.

I hope they leave Eowyn as written instead of having someone else kill the Witch King.

Liv Tyler may be a good Arwen, but Cate Blanchett will be a GREAT Galadriel, and Sir Ian as Gandalf should be great too.

I read Mrs. Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10 to my daughter's kindergarten class. It's a wonderful book in which a child realizes that his teacher doesn't really live at the school! The children then read "Hop on Pop" with me. It was delightful.

By the way, extreme kudos to Jane Folger at the Maplewood Library for the wonderful Celebrities Read Across America program last night. Along with nearly 200 other residents, we were treated to dramatic readings, operatic readings, readings in song and bell!, and just plain fun reading. It was wonderful!

EJT - whoever you are - could we elect Frodo to TC? Or at least Sam?

Mayor Gamgee!

The Witch King of Angmar for Mayor? hmmm...

We'd have to change the TC to a nine member board.
