Would appreciate recommendation(s) for a good, honest, fair-priced furnace/heater repair person.... a bit urgent, but don't want to just call anyone (too many bad surprises).... thanks.

We use Murray Levee & Sons Plumbing and have been VERY happy with them. I think they do furnace and AC repair. Jack Levee is the owner and quite a nice man. And their service is quick and their prices are great!
