Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced health insurance plan (HMO or PPO) for self-employed people? Right now we purchase it through the Local AFL/CIO union for $600/month for a family but it doesn't cover any preventative care and we have to pay $30 for each prescription.

Can anyone recommend any groups to join that have good coverage? My husband is a graphic artist and I'm a writer.

We use blue cross blue shield horizon HMO, which costs about the same as yours; but it's an HMO and covers pretty much everything (except prescriptions, unfortunately). We got it through a really nice broker named Jeff Morrison. His number is 973-359-8664. His services are free to the buyer, and he can probably recommend a number of options.

There are some national organizations of self-employed persons that offer health plans. I think one is called the Nat'l Assoc. of Sel-Employed Professionals or something like that. I just saw the name on a jobsearch engine. Sorry I didn't jot it down

Take a look at this page and browse the site: http://www.naic.org/nj/reform.htm

I believe the info there would be relevant to your situation. The insurance plans/rates offered are for individuals (including self-employed folks, like ourselves) who are not covered by insurance elsewise or elsewhere. There are a number of plans, with varying levels of deductibles and rates (with HMO, PPO, and indemnity plans offered among the options). Not necessarity cheap, but worth looking into to compare. Good luck!

Deborahg,
Not wishing the worst on anyone, but i feel a need to point out that if anyone should (godforbid) be stricken with cancer, chemotherapy is a prescription.

and a really, really, really expensive one.
