Hello out there! I'm looking for suggestions for a kid who writes well and with purpose and wants to publish. (Seeing Almost Famous probably didn't hurt!) Do you have any suggestions for publications that you think appropriate for a young adolescent and his work? I think he would prefer paper to websites, but maybe those would work too. Thanks a lot!

My first recommendation is to borrow or buy a copy of the 'Children's Writer's & Illustrators Market,' 2001 addition (assuming it's out). Mine is the 2000 edition. It includes a great deal of information, book publishers, agents, and the like along with interviews of writers, artists, etc. in the business.

In the book is a section, "Young Writer's & Illustrator's Markets,' which includes approximately 20 magazines that are for children and by children either entirely or in part. It gives essential information about each magazine including URL's. 'Creative Kids' is at www.prufrock.com It's for ages 8-14. 'Potluck Children's Literary Magazine, http://members.aol.com/nappic

The book also includes contests and awards for children, too.

Another avenue is to do this research in the library or on the web. They have similar reference books. And they may also have some of the magazines for him to look at. Also, the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrator's is at http://www.scbwi.org

Even if he gets the names of magazines that accept submissions from kids, it's always good to do a little more research so he doesn't waste his time submitting to magazines that may not be in the market for his type of story because of subject, length, etc. Also, the different magazines have different submission rules, e.g., multiple submissions, etc.

Good luck. I think it's wonderful that you're helping him take advantage of what's out there.
