Hi all,

We just added a beautiful little Golden Retriever puppy to our family and were wondering if anyone can recommend a good dog trainer in the area who offers "puppy kindergarten" classes?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

We used Saint Hubert's in Madison. It's not too far, has a good class size and nice teachers. They offer classes from puppy kindergarten all the way up to super advanced (which I somehow doubt we'll be getting to). I know several other people who have been happy with their classes too. Good luck :)

I was not too crazy with St. Hubert's. I think you are better off with hiring a dog trainer who comes to your house and works with you.

Jim:do you mind a few tips from an experienced golden owner? They're lovely animals, but my second one, now almost eight, nearly killed me, and I was a stay-at -home-mom! They need trememdous amounts of exercise. A tired puppy is a good puppy. St huberts might be helpful: but in our case, the sights and sounds of so many other dogs made mine wild; we would have been better off with a trainer who came to the house. Best puppy book is the one by the monks of new skete: "the art of raising a puppy." Did you get the pup from a breeder? My gut is that goldens are losing some of that mellow, easy to train disposition they (used to be ) famous for, but maybe I was just unlucky. On the other hand, now that my dog is almost eight, he is perfect. And what a pleasure to see him bushwacking through the snowy woods this winter, totally indifferent to the snow and cold. Just yesterday he went swimming in a river in the reservation...good luck to all of you! Oh - Dr. Croman at S Orange Animal Hosp. is a golden fancier. Believe he has 2 or 3.

Mck:

Don't mind at all - I actually welcome any and all tips. Please - bring 'em on!

We did get the pup from a very dedicated, trustworthy breeder with a following of satisfied owners. Hopefully, that'll help.

So far we're very happy with Kelly. She's great with the kids and learning fast.

What could we expect to pay to a private trainer?

Thanks so much for your comments,
Jim
