We plan to move to the area and I will hopefully be pregnant by then. I had a C-Section with my first and will probably need another. I currently have a great doctor in Ridgewood but I'm not sure I want to travel that far. Can anyone who has had a C-section recommend a good OB? Also what hospital would you recommend for a so called "high risk" pregnancy due to maternal age...38! Wow.(I don't feel so old!) Thanks. |

Shaws- there is a large group of us in Maplewood that go to Dr. Neil Russo in Livingston. He is part of a wonderful group on Northfield Avenue called Physicians for Women's Health. ALL of the Dr's in his practice are soooo WONDERFUL. The entire staff is very supportive. Also, they have a perinatologist (sp?) named Dr. Hollander, who attends all high-risk patients. They all deliver out of St. Barnabas, which has a top-notch Maternity ward and NICU. In addition, several of my friends who go to this pratice have had c-sections. And all had great experiences with various Dr's (including Russo) in the practice. By the way, if you'd like to see a female Dr, Dr. Tammy Hamilton with Russo's pratice is very nice. (beware- she looks very young for her age!) Good luck! |

I want to put in a second for this group -- my ob/gyn is Tammy Hamilton, and she delivered my son last month and did a FANTASTIC job. I am 40 so I am also quote high risk unquote (silly, isn't it)? Anyway, they are affiliated with St. Barnabas, which is the best hospital inthe area if not all of NJ -- beware, though, they have no private rooms and you need to assert yourself to get peace and quiet during your recovery time! |

I've had two VBAC's (three children total). First two kids at Lenox Hill in NYC last one at St. Barnabas. I was on complete bedrest for all three due to high-risk stuff like pre-term labor and "advanced maternal age" - I'm not even 40 yet! I highly recommend Dr. Angela Wimmer and Dr. Ernani Sadural on Northfield Ave. (973) 736-7700. They are both young, experienced and they received all their training in the high-risk department (Fetal/Maternal Medicine) of St. Barnabas. It was the high -risk folks that recommended them to me. Go VBAC girl!! If you can swing it, it's sooooo much easier to recover. |

Thanks for the help! I had heard St. Barnabas was great. Too bad about the private rooms! I had one at Valley in Ridgewood and my husband could stay if he wanted to which was great. KMK- I would love to go VBAC! I was planning on totally natural..never wanted an epidural and ended up with pitocin, an epidural and a section. I "failed to progress" after 18 hours only 3 centimeters...though my water broke spontaneously. My son was 10 lbs and 22" long and was just not coming down. My doctor really gave it as much time as he could before opting for the section. He has since said that he would recommend a scheduled section because most likely the second baby will be bigger. I don't know about that. I also don't know what actually caused me not to progress and whether it would happen again. He kept saying, "oh yeah we made the right decision" when he saw my son. |

I had a VBAC too and it was a profoundly healing experience after a rather horrific, all-hopes-dashed first birth experience. I would definitely seek a doctor that supported such an approach. I used certified nurse midwives myself (for a VBAC, at 41) to try and insure the outcome we wanted. I had complete faith in them. |

I recently received a newsletter from St. B, where they discussed a major expansion of their OB wing, which would include some private rooms. Also, depending on how "high risk" you are, there is already a wing for moms with multiples/preemies, etc where many of the rooms are private, but I don't think you can request it. |

Hi, I just had twins via c-section in November and I go to West Essex Ob/gyn. There are 5 doctors, Dr. DeGraf who is famous for being so sweet and wonderful I don't think is taking new patients but Dr. Verdoni was on call when I needed my c-section and did a fantastic job!!! I was so suprised. He was being funny because I was so scared and he made me laugh and feel very comfortable. We loved him so much and we brought the babies to see him to take a picture. If you feel more comfortable with a woman then you must see Dr. Claudine Slyvester - whenever you are voicing a concern or worry she puts her hand on you and makes you feel so safe. That group use to have a bad rap because of their office staff but in the last few months they have made major improvements that are indicative of the great group of doctors. I left Physicians for Women's Health - Dr. Hamilton was very nice the first time I saw her, but Dr. Hollander who was my primary physician there made me feel awful and I caught him make a very inappropriate remark about me so I left them when I was 20 weeks pregnant. Good luck! |
