Wait a second... I'm perfectly warm and comfortable in my office. I don't even have a sweater on. You say it's COLD? What are you, STUPID? |

How does looking for alternatives (and manufacturing them) harm the economy? I think it more accurate to say that we're in the vice grip of Big Oil, and we'd upset THEIR "economy". But not if they developed alternatives themselves- (naah- too much work- vision- investment-and forward thinking- let's just pretend there's no problem, and tell people it would be like like bailing the ocean with a pail.) Many dismiss the need to lessen man's effect on the environment because, well, they'll be dead when it hits the fan anyway, so why bother? For me, I will never understand that thinking. |

The same could be said about those refusing to reform Social Security, don't make any effort for longterm care so they go on Medicaid for nursing home care, refuse to reform Medicare when these programs are bleeding this country dry and are verifiably bankrupt or close to it. DOn't touch it, it's paying for my sorry butt -- screw the grandkids. But I don't say that about them, because I think -- misguided as they are -- they really believe these programs are the answer (leaving some politicians out of this). There are efforts to get into other forms of energy (Gee...hope Old Walter Cronkite lets that wind farm take place on Cape Cod). Solar has a place too. But to date, hydrocarbons are irreplaceable unless you go nuclear. It will happen. It's just not there yet, nor is the market for it there yet. Looking and investing in is different than penalizing, taxing and mandating and restricting and prosecuting and suing based on faulty logic and science and doom and gloom. And the interesting thing about the moon is there is an abundance of helium-3 up there, which they say is a key to having fusion take place (I don't do the article justice). If you can have nuclear fusion and have that energy find it's way to earth -- that would be so incomprehensibly huge!

Only the Great Strawberry could pull off such a feat. I actually got 10 liberals arguing about global warming during the coldest day in years and years. I think I deserve a round of Applause for that one! Well, maybe Gore deserves the applause instead...Afterall, it was his idea, more than mine. BUSH/CHENEY IN 2004.. |

two quotes from Matt Drudge's brilliant piece.
quote:GORE TO WARN OF 'GLOBAL WARMING' ON NEW YORK CITY'S COLDEST DAY IN DECADES!
quote:forecasters predict Thursday night will bring the coldest temperature reading in New York City in more than 10 years
How can both of these statements be true? (answer: they can't). How can either of them be relevant? (answer: again, they can't). Here's from Gore's speech: "And wealthy right-wing ideologues have joined with the most cynical and irresponsible companies in the oil, coal and mining industries to contribute large sums of money to finance pseudo-scientific front groups that specialize in sowing confusion in the public’s mind about global warming. They issue one misleading “report” after another, pretending that there is significant disagreement in the legitimate scientific community in areas where there is actually a broad-based consensus."

Thank you for your very insightful posts on global warming based in good part on one cold day in January. All this high level thinking from giants of the right intimidates me, to be quite honest. However, on my way to work this morning on the good ferry “Congressman Roe” I noticed the lack of ice. Stretching my very limited mental abilities I remembered in past years by this time of year ice was usually a problem in the harbor. Then really stretching my mental capacity, I remembered a couple of week ends ago being out in a light jacket in 50 degree plus temperatures and even digging a couple of root balls out of the ground. Uhm, might this whole global warming situation have something to do with the average or even mean temperature, not one day in January? But of course who cares if the annual average temperature increases a few degrees? Hell my beach house is protected by the Federal Flood Insurance Program and I might end up with oceanfront property right here in Maplewood.

I love thinking about that kind of energy solution. Hope we figure it out. But something makes me think that we'll need a bridge between fossil fuel dependency and Moon Juice. Hey, if there's more to W.'s NASA moon plans than just distraction and rewarding more special interests in TX and FL, I'm willling to give it a look. But it has to really compelling to spend that kind of dough up there while ignoring some fixes here. |

"Indeed, they often use Orwellian language to disguise their true purposes. For example, a policy that opens national forests to destructive logging of old-growth trees is labeled Healthy Forest Initiative. A policy that vastly increases the amount of pollution that can be dumped into the air is called the Clear Skies Initiative."-Al Gore While some people think Gore is an "idiot", there is an awful lot of truth to what he says. In fact, one would have to be a fruit to attack the message because he doesn't like the messenger |

quote:Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases are likely to accelerate the rate of climate change. Scientists expect that the average global surface temperature could rise 1-4.5°F (0.6-2.5°C) in the next fifty years, and 2.2-10°F (1.4-5.8°C) in the next century, with significant regional variation. Evaporation will increase as the climate warms, which will increase average global precipitation. Soil moisture is likely to decline in many regions, and intense rainstorms are likely to become more frequent. Sea level is likely to rise two feet along most of the U.S. coast. Calculations of climate change for specific areas are much less reliable than global ones, and it is unclear whether regional climate will become more variable.

quote:
Since 1979, scientists have generally agreed that a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide increases the earth's average surface temperature by 3-8°F (1.5-4.5°C). More recent studies have suggested that the warming is likely to occur more rapidly over land than the open seas. Moreover, the warming in temperatures tends to lag behind the increase in greenhouse gases. At first, the cooler oceans will tend to absorb much of the additional heat and thereby decrease the warming of the atmosphere. Only when the ocean comes into equilibrium with the higher level of CO2 will the full warming occur. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates that the concentration of CO2 will double from pre-industrial levels by the mid- to late 21st century. Currently, the panel projects a global average warming of 1.0-4.5°F (0.6-2.5°C) in the next fifty years and 2.5 to 10.4°F (1.4 to 5.8°C) by the year 2100, compared with the global average temperature in 1990. The wide range in projected temperatures is due to varying assumptions about future trends in greenhouse gas emissions and sulfate aerosols.

Dave, You're missing the point. When numb skulls like Al Gore hold meetings on Global warming in January, especially during a deep freeze the message he has won't be accepted by the masses. And if the masses don't buy the theories, neither will the law makers who could begin passing the legislation you want. Al Gore may be one of the biggest idiots in the history of American politics. This is just the latest example. THANK GOD GEORGIE BOY IS MY PRESIDENT!!!!!

So they should only address long term environmental issues in July during tourist season? How short-sighted is that? (Not to mention conferences in warmer months would cost taxpayers more because room rates are higher then - for the EPA staff who are likely attending.) And I guess scientists are numbskulls and idiots, too. |

There is no verified proof that the earth is in danger due to global warming. For every Scientist who says it's a serious issue, you have dozens who claim the opposite.
