I'm considering building a deck and am looking for some recommendations.

Also, I'm a new homeowner and new to this whole process. How can I find out how a new deck would affect my property tax?

Is it unreasonable to expect a contractor to come out for a free estimate? Thanks.

All estimates should be free. Get at least three and pick the one in the middle.

We used Giordano Construction out of Belleville. The owner, Nick Giordano, was very nice and the project was completed exactly on time. Also, his price and his work were both excellent. And yes, he came for a free estimate!

We used Jarek Construction last year. We had lots of estimates, but Jarek came highly recommended. Did a beautiful job on my deck and did it all while we were on vacation. I will look up the number for you and report back.

Thanks for the info. Tupperjo, I got Jarek's number from another thread.

Although we recommended Jarek to a friend because of threads on this board and also had him give us an estimate on a some kitchen work, be sure to clarify with him about hidden costs; i.e., if he runs into something he did not plan on. He charged my friend an extra $200 when he did not estimate the level of a floor correctly on a small job of creating a closet door and closing another. I found that his estimates are very vague, so be sure to get specifics.

Jarek's number is 908-665-2120.

I also got referred to a very nice guy named Alex. His number is 908-875-4844. Both he and Jarek have come by my house for estimates. They both seem good, but Alex was a little cheaper and seemed a little more flexible.
