We are looking for pediatrician recommendations. (We've got a 16 month old.) |

We take our 15-month-old to a group practice consisting of Drs. Lubin, Gruenwald, Commandatore, and Sterio (am I leaving anyone out?) in South Orange, and we're pretty happy there. They're really good about squeezing you into the schedule if something crops up -- a cold, a cough, etc -- and pretty good about calling back. We have not yet had a true emergency requiring calling them in the middle of the night or something, so I'm not able to say how they are about that stuff. THe office staff is also pretty friendly. Overall, a very nice practice. |

I second the kudos for Drs. Lubin, Gruenwald, Commandatore, and Sterio. We have used them for nearly ten years and been very satisfied. Their staff is also extremely good about helping you over the phone so you don't always have to come in to the office. There have been some recent threads on this topic, so you may also want to check the archives where you will see more on this group as well as others in the area. |

I removed my children from the Gruenwald/Sterio practice as I was not happy with a Doctor there. We now see Dr Boodish and Mangru on Milburn Ave. Unfortunately this past Christmas a life threatening situation did arise with my two year old and I Thank God every day that Dr Boodish recognised the signs that saved her life. I cannot praise them enough! |

May I ask which doctor you were unhappy with? We see Dr. Lubin, but have had only routine visits so far (we moved to Maplewood last summer). |

We like Drs. Boodish and Mangru too. They are VERY different, but both have their strengths. The practice is also extremely well run -- I have never waited more than a MINUTE to see the doctor, if you can believe that. Truly amazing. |

In the discussion thread on this topic (sometime in the last couple of months) several people expressed unhappiness with Dr. Sterio due to her "get to the point" manner which some felt was not warm and nurturing. However, others were very positive about her. Both Dr. Gruenwald and Dr. Comandatore are favorites with my children so we usually see one of them. But we have been confident and comfortable with the other doctors and their staff, also, so that we feel comfortable that our children's needs will always be met. We also like the fact that there are two women in the practice (Comandatore/Sterio) since that may become more of an issue for our daughters as they get older. Since there are four doctors in the practice, they have extensive office hours and almost never go to an outsider for coverage. (Perhaps if they have a wedding or other key family event there might be an exception to this.) |

We also use Drs Comandatore et al. Our son has seen everyone. I like them all except Dr. Sterio who told me at our first visit to "Don't bother nursing your son. You will never feed a big kid like that." (He was over 9 lbs.) The others are very friendly and nurturing for kids and parents alike. The staff is very helpful and friendly. I have never had to see Dr. Sterio again and my son is now 18 months. |

I can't believe a pediatrician in this day and age (especially a woman!) would say something so completely ridiculous, stupid, incorrect and contrary to the best interests of your child!!!! I also use that practice but have only met Gruenwald on a check up visit - I'll be sure to steer clear of Sterio. |

The last time I went to the Lubin etal practice, I was appalled by comments from Dr. Lubin about my 2-1/2 year's old vomiting. He commented that "maybe she's pregnant". I am hardly a prude, however, I found this kind of reference to my female baby disgusting and appalling!! Also his manner, in general, was blatantly unfriendly and abrupt. How does a grown man/doctor make a comment like that?! A very sick and unprofessional one! |

Deborahg; It was Dr sterio I was unhappy with but also my friend had problems with another doctor over the vaccinations. Just to give you one example of why I love the Boodish practice, my child became ill two days before Christmas, we were seen by her pediatrician that day, the next day they opened their office on Christmas Eve (Sunday) and we were seen again. Dr Boodish was at our side at the hospital on Christmas Day when they put her in the ICU. I also have never experienced more than a few minutes wait there and the receptionist staff are wonderful. |

I'll never forget the time when Dr. Lubin told me that the reason my normally happy two year old burst into tears everytime she saw him was because she had a "personality disorder!" I removed her from the practise (18 years ago) and went to Dr. Edith Halvorson on Prospect St in South Orange (763-3314). She is in a solo practise so you know who you'll be seeing every time and she is warm, knowledgeable and very caring. Can't recommend her highly enough. |

The wonderful pediatrician I saw when my children were young was Dr. Semel in Livingston (I believe he is retired now). I understand his daughter is now practicing there. I really am in no position to comment on that practice, however I would like to share a story. When my now almost 20 year old son was almost one, we moved to Maplewood. The pediatrician I used in Teaneck recommended Lubin, so naturally I took my son there for his next regular check-up. My son, who never before cried at the doctor's office during check-ups wailed throughtout this one. Lubin was cold, pedantic, frankly, uninterested and I never went back there again. What amazes me is that after almost 20 years, with apparently all of these posts reflecting the same sentiment, he is still practicing in peds. |

Our teen-ager has been going to Dr. Halvorson in South Orange since he was two and a half. She's great. |

I take my 7-month-old son to the Semel-Goldenring practice in Livingston. We've always seen Dr. Chua there, and she's wonderful. |

Well, I have contradictory info for you. I moved to Maplewood recently with a very sensitive and shy 6 year old. We met two pediatricians, and of them we chose Dr. Sterio. She is very personable, and my daughter likes her very much. She wanted a female doctor, and Dr. Sterio raised two daughters. We went for our first check up and it went fine. I can't believe she said that about breast feeding, it seems so out of character! She seems to me like a very flexible doctor, who wouldn't intervene as forcefully as that. She is not quick to prescribe and she listens to you. We waited all of 5 minutes to see her. Any other good feedback on her? Nervous Now. |

Duncanl, This whole discussion is territory that's been covered once before. I tried to do a search on Sterio in the archive, to find the discussion, in which both partisans and detractors weighed in. I couldn't find it. At any rate, there was at least one very positive post about her, if I'm recalling correctly. We use that practice, too, and I trust her as a physician. |

Does anyone here use Dr. Vigorita in Summit? My kids go to him, and he has seemed ok, but I wonder if I need to put up with going to someone as prickly as he is. |

Choosing a pediatrician is a difficult decision for any parent but everyone is different and what works for one family will not for others. I did not want to mention names as there are probably parents who love this doctor. I once had a pediatrician in the City who actually inadvertantly harmed my child by his incompetence and thus I have become very sensitive to doctors and their treatment of my children. If you dont feel comfortable and dont feel you can completely trust your child's doctor, move on and find someone else. There are so many to choose from, a good source to ask are pediatric nurses at your local hospital. |

We've been very happy with Dr Bender at the Summit Medical Group in Short Hills. A plus is that the lab is upstairs if the kid needs xray, blood tests etc. We've been through lead fears and pneumonia this year so it did help. |
