We're going to Bermuda next week for the first time and wondered whether anyone had any suggestions for good restaurants, bars, etc. Thanks! |

Bermuda is wonderful! My husband and I have been twice together and he's been there a couple of other times as well. Definitely rent mopeds and explore the island -- it's a very welcoming place. We found most of the places we ended up eating at just by chance. I can't remember too many places by name -- but I could tell you where they are! There is a restaurant in Hamilton which I think is called something like the Wine Cellar, where we had Thanksgiving dinner. It is on one of the side streets off the main road in Hamilton, and you have to walk through a small garden/patio to get into the restaurant. It was excellent. There is also a great restaurant on the main road that runs on the south side of the island. It is west of many of the big resorts, by itself, and has outdoor seating and is called Paw Paw, if I remember correctly. There is a little local place on Ord Road which has the most amazing jerk chicken - it's a tiny place with a big metal grill outside. I wish I could remember the name. Also, don't forget to drop by the Swizzle Inn (it is on the road to the airport - your cab driver will probably point it out) and have a pitcher of Swizzles. I recommend only one, as you will have a hard time navigating your moped after that. There are so many great things to see -- there's a lighthouse on the south end of Hamilton Bay that has a cute little restaurant at the bottom where we had breakfast in the morning and then climbed the lighthouse for a wonderful view. There is also a fort in the middle of Hamilton (Fort Hamilton, maybe?) that has botanical gardens in what used to be the moat. There's a nature preserve that is adjacent to the water (hard for things not to be, the island isn't that big) where we saw the most incredible birds and colorful fish feeding off of the rocks jutting out into the sea. We recommend checking out all nature preserves on the island -- you can probably pick up a pamphlet at the airport when you arrive. Anyway, obviously, I could go on and on, but my best advice to you is explore, ask the locals, and dare to have an adventure. I don't think there's any way you'll be disappointed. Like I said earlier, if I can remember any names of places, I'll repost. Have a great time! (BTW, I'm extremely jealous!) |

Try the Water Hole for dinner. Moderately priced and excellent food. It is also at the south end of the island near the Southhampton Princess Hotel. There is also a secluded beach on the road leading to the Southhampton Princess, about 300 feet off to the left, just before the entrance to the hotel drive. There is a launch that goes from the Hamilton Princess to the Southhampton Princess that is free of charge. The drink of choice among the local residents is the "Dark and Stormy". Rum and ginger beer, delicious! |

Some things never change! The drink of choice when I went there on my honeymoon in 1956 was the "Dark and Stormy"!! |

DEFINITELY go to horseshoe beach It is unbelievably beautiful. Rent some scooters and tour the island. You can see so much and it's great fun. Try going to the Fort at the very north of the island. There's a great pub with good food. Ride up, have a bite and a cold one, then continue your tour. I forget the name of the pub, though. Frog & Onion? it escapes me now. B|X |

I credit Bermuda for our second child! There is an expensive - but totally worth it - place called something like the Tom Jones Tavern. It's terrible I don't remember the name! We had a bottle of wine there that I will never forget - Silver Oak - I even have the vintage information written down somewhere for reference. The place is on the far Eastern side of the island and we took a cab (mopeds and wine don't mix, especially late at night.) Have fun and name your nest child "Hamilton." (If that applies of course....) |

Don't forget to greet everybody with a "Good Day" before beginning ANY conversation. It is a local custom. They take their courtesies seriously there! |

Don't ring ANY bell in ANY bar. If you do, you have to buy the entire establishment drinks. They take this very seriously too! |

Nilmeister - I did ring the bell at the Mariners' Sailor's Club last year and I'm still paying off the drinks I had to buy. I figure I'll be done buying them by this spring and can finally go back. Bermuda rules! The Robin Hood right above Hamilton has great food, not too expensive, and very casual. The Mariner's is across the street, a real English pub. |

Let me rephrase: What months are best to visit Bermuda? Is it warm enough in April and October? Too hot in July? Thanks. |

2yearsinBermuda->2yearsinMaplewood. Best times are April-May and October-November. June/July is too humid. Only really gets mildly cool (and windy) in Jan/Feb. Only downside is variable weather - April/May can be rainy and Oct/Nov is storm season - you have to take a chance. Hurricanes almost always miss (much better than Carribean) but can make for heavy storms. Flights are only about 90mins which makes it a great long weekend especially since it's small (a full week may run out of things to do) and expensive. Great snorkelling/diving/windsurfing/beaches. Friendly and safe. Any other questions: email me at barleyrooty @ iname.com |
