Hi, Everyone. We're moving to Maplewood in late May and need to identify a good preschool for our 3 year old daughter. My husband and I work full-time in NYC and will be looking for a full-time preschool/daycare situation. I realize this topic has come up here before and I saw the posts about Discovery and Children's. Are there any other parents out there who want to weigh in? Also, both my daughter and I are Korean adoptees. We would love to connect with families with adopted Asian children. Is there a group for adoptive families in the Maplewood area? Many thanks. |

There is an informal group of families with children from China, since there are a very large number of kids from China in Maplewood and South Orange (who are now entering the public schools.) This will be an interesting cohort to watch through the years, I think. Anyway, the most organized we get is for an annual Lunar New Year Party. I noticed that the group A.K.A (a Korean adoption community, I believe) is hosting a multicountry adoption/cultural awareness day in Queens on 3/24. This does not answer your question about a local group but I remembered it as I was reading your post and thought you might be interested. If you want more info, let me know and I'll go back to the source where I read it and get the details. I'm unaware of any general adoption group in town, however. Someone else may be able to enlighten both of us. Welcome to Maplewood. It's a great town and very welcoming of families of all different kinds. Bacata |

Our son is at the YMCA daycare and we have been very happy there. The hours are 7:00 AM 7:00 PM, which can be very handy when the trains are delayed. Their number is 762-0860. |

My ten week old son just started at Discovery and appears to be loving it so far. The staff are very helpful and caring. There is great diversity among the kids (we're Asian) and I am hoping that he will learn to interact with the kids soon enough with everyone there. They are open 7 to 7. Check them out or email me if you need anything. |

Thanks to all for your responses. It looks like we'll be enrolling our daughter at the YMCA in the 3s & 4s class. Bacata: I know about the AKA event but thanks for offering to look up the info. Would love to hear more about the group of Families with Children from China. Would you be willing to include families w/kids from Korea? email me at dotenrico@aol.com, if you like. Dottie |
