First she was then she wasn't. Then there's always the fun little "in-house" politics the local Dems like to play. Finally, today we have her announcement. From today's Snooze Record : "I think 12 years is a good run. It's a good long run and I've enjoyed it. " So happy we were able to keep you entertained, Ellen. "There are a lot of interesting people in town and they need an opportunity (as long as they're not the evil Republicans). 12 years is a good tenure and it's just time to move over" How many years were you on the TC Ellen ? Davenport first won a seat in 1990.. Her issue : instituting guest passes for the municipal swimming pool. " It wasn't aid to the Contras, but it was important to Maplewood" Swimming pool guest passes. And so it began. No issue too small to champion. No fire too big to put out. And who could the Dems run to possibly try and replace her ? Hmmm.. let's see... What local Democrat has been dying to get on that TC....? Stay tuned ! |

I saw the subject heading, and as a district employee, immediately assumed you were referring to MARILYN Davenport! |

Is she just afraid of being defeated based on 12 years of increasing taxes? |

Keeping politics completely out of the picuture, Maplewoodian, Ellen Davenport, has always been a professional, both in the way she performed her duties and in her appearance to the public. As I've heard so many times during her 12 years of service, Ellen Davenport, is a lady with class. Whether or not one agreed with how she voted on any given subject, she had our respect. Having had the privilege of knowing all the members of the Maplewood Township Committee since 1962, Ellen Davenport takes with her the special ability that so many before her possesed....class. |

Today we should congratulate Mrs. Davenport on a job well done. Today we should wish Mrs. Davenport a future filled with good health and much happiness. Today we should simply offer our thanks to Mrs. Davenport for her many years of unselfish public service. Maplewood is better off, the Democratic Party is better off and each and every one of us is better off because of the work and effort put forth over the years by Mrs. Davenport. This town of ours will for some time experience a void in the public sector. The very fabric of our government is interwoven with initiatives and achievements by Mrs. Davenport. As the Democratic Party and the Township Committee prepare to move forward let us take this time to reflect. Today we have a more visible and accessible governing body. Public meetings are televised on local cable, our pool is accessible to guests, plastics are recycled and the jitney is a reality. This past year Mrs. Davenport worked tirelessly on behalf of the Democratic Party and Sen. Bill Bradley. Her efforts on behalf of Sen. Bradley raised Maplewood's standing amongst towns statewide. She was the face of the New Jersey Bradley campaign and a face that represented Maplewood's interests first. Maplewood is indeed on the map, thanks in no small part to Mrs. Davenport. Whomever is elected to replace Mrs. Davenport does in fact have large shoes to fill. We are loosing a public official with unmatched experience but, in the long run, gaining a private citizen with unmatched love for this town of ours. Her counsel and support will be needed by many in the years to come, hopefully those who need it never forget what she has already done for one and all alike. Thank you Ellen. Marc A. amen. I've always found Ms. Davenport to be inspirational in her committment, her gentle perserverence, her dedication to the community. She will, indeed, leave a void. And those pool passes were no small deal. (smiles). We always felt like jerks when we would have company in the summer and couldn't even invite them to the pool. |

Good luck in the future to Mrs. Davenport. While I may not agree with philosophies all the time, at least she was bound by her conviction and character and showed a true interest in Maplewood. That being said, it doesn't exactly hurt the local Democrats, or herself, that she is not running. As the only incumbant running in the wake of our fiscal crisis, she was almost certain to face some sort of backlash from both Democrats and Republicans. She would have taken the heat for the entire TC. This obviously saves the Democrats from what could have been an ugly public in-fight. It allows the Democrats to capitalize on a "change" candidate and split that "vote for change" between two parties. I can't say for certain whether her decision to step aside was designed for this purpose, but there is no denying the effect. |

Talk about a set up! Is a well known fact there is no love lost between some of the members and Mrs. Davenport. Good for her she didn't take the bait. They will run someone new and capitalize on the fact that they had nothing to do with that reval. And no one will challenge them. Brilliant! |

You people must all be talking about a different Ellen Davenport. Behind that smiling exterior was a woman who would bad mouth people as soon as they turned their back. She has been overheard doing this viciously in her old store when she thought no one else was in there. It will be sad to see her go because of all the fun in-fighting between the current township committee members that clainm to be from the same party! |
